Big Beck's Boost

United triumph but Becks injury blow had England worried

England were handed a major boost this morning when Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that David Beckham might have recovered from his ankle injury to play again as early as next week.

"We will know more later, but he could be back for next week," commented the United manager when the team arrived back on English soil.

What should have been a night to savour for David Beckham and Manchester United in Spain last night had ended in distress for the England captain after he left the pitch on a stretcher with he and the rest of the country desperately hoping that he has not suffered a serious injury.

With the English Champions 2-0 up against Deportivo La Coruna in Wednesday’s Champions League Quarter Final First Leg, Beckham was caught by a late and callous tackle from the Deportivo forward, Diego Tristan.

Doubled over in pain, and covering his face with his hands in a manner reminiscent of Gazza in the 1991 F.A. Cup Final, David left the field on a stretcher for immediate medical attention.

The prognosis after the game was that Becks has sustained swelling above his ankle but no more could be ascertained at that stage.

"It was a terrible tackle on David," said the Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson.

"The player only got a yellow and that’s really debatable because it should have been a red card.

"I’m surprised it was Tristan because he’s a footballer.’’

Ferguson explained the England skipper would have an X-ray back in Manchester today.

"We’ll have a look at it and he will have an X-ray on Tuesday."

In the first half Becks had shown that he really is playing at the height of his powers at the moment. His brilliance crowned Coruna with one of the finest goals of his career. Picking up the ball mid-way inside the Spaniards’ half, Beckham unleashed one of those perfect shots that are destined for the net from the moment that they are struck.

The ball sped high into the night’s sky before curling and dipping viciously at the last as it arrowed into the top left-hand corner.

United went on to clinch a crucial victory thanks to delicate Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s volleyed finish from a teasing Silvestre centre.

And, if the injury is not as bad as had been feared, United will be able to fully appreciate what was a tremendous result against a team of the hightest quality.

I hope the injuries dont far out weight manchester Uniteds performance. Lets hope Beckham is back next week.

He wasn't holding his knee

When it's on the knee it hurts like feck

Like you could see in Pires' case
yeah i also heard that it wasn`t as bad as first thought and he`ll probaly miss a month, which is really gonna damage our pl campaign.
Is there any news from Beckham's X-ray yet?
If it is bad Man U will really struggle without Veron, Keane and Beckham.
Looks like Keano will be out till the second leg of the semi-final(that is if we do manage to reach the semis;)).

Its a big blow to the club as we all know what his presence means to us.:(I am just praying that Becks' injury is not as serious as everybody thinks it is.Fergie's got a headache picking a team for Leicester let alone Depor.

These injuries have really come at the worst possible time.:depress:

you won't scare us that easily. it was definately a hamstring and he'll be out for atleast 6 weeks. anymore incisive comments diego?
Well at least Beckham should be back for the secong leg, we are still capable of doing v.well with Beckham and Giggs on the wings.
Keane's hamstring is a very big blow, but we can cope, as butt had a very good game against depor, man marking valeron, who was kept quiet and eventually taken off. Note that Valeron was the key to Arsenal's demolition, as he gets into the troublesome area's, behind the midfield and ahead of the defence.

But with Veron missing we cannot cope without Beckham because there is no replacement winger. There would be Chadwick, but he is on loan to Everton.

Let's just hope Beckham is injury free, from now to the end of the season as now is not the best of times, for all of our midfielders to get injured. :(

He is, he is out for the season as I've previously stated...

The Chadwick at Everton is Nick Chadwick, not Luke Chadwick...

PL clubs can't loan players from one another btw...

Good to see that Utd fans know about the team these days...

 ;)

Even I knew that!!
Deportivo La Coruna striker Diego Tristan has expressed his regret over his reckless tackle on David Beckham, saying: "I'm so sorry - I lost my head."

The Spanish international lunged in on the England captain after the ball had gone, leaving Beckham in a heap and requiring him to be stretchered off.

Beckham suffered swelling to his ankle, but should be OK for the return Champions League meeting with Tristan.

The Spaniard was as relieved as anyone to learn that Beckham's injury was not as severe as first feared, saying: "I'm very sorry about what happened.

"It all happened very quickly. I'm delighted to hear David is not badly hurt - I must admit I thought it would be a lot worse.

"I have been worried about him all day.

"It really was just my enthusiasm - a moment when I lost my head.

"I repeat, I am very, very sorry and I will say sorry to David when I see him again.

"It is something I am not proud of it at all. Now I want to forget all about it."

No chance. That wasn't enthusiasm, it was malicious, and a product of his frustration at being second best. There was no need for it. He can expect a warm reception at Old Trafford when he turns up;)
