Obviously it won't be the best ever, and he didn't come cheap, but Chivu by Roma was incredible. :proud:

Considering that Barca, Inter, Man Utd, RM, Juventus, Arsenal and all the other big clubs in Europe were all over him, it's amazing that Baldini and Sensi managed to bring such a player to a club that's broke and with no realistic European aspirations :proud: :D

Ibrahimovic wasn't really a coup though, it was more like taking a dubious prize amidst generally unwilling competitors. De Sanctis was an unknown quantity and more of a gamble that worked out. and Milan were probably always going to get Nesta since they were the most prestigious club in the running for him, prepared to offer the most, and had the benefit of Berlusconi and Galliani's powers of "negotiation" to force a deal.

Man Utd signing Ronaldo :D
Is a big, prestigious club offering too much money for an unknown quantity that nobody else is really chasing considered a monumental coup for Ferguson?

Vieira for 3.5m
Campbell for zip
Bergkamp for 7.5m (or was it 4.5m?)
Pires for 5.5m
Henry for 10.5m
Anelka for 500k (profit of 22.5m)

Milan signing van Basten in the summer of 1987 for "only" £1.5M. A bargain considering that Juve signed Ian Rush :shades: for more than 2 times that amount, and Liverpool paid almost £3M a year later to bring him back from Turin to Merseyside.

Recent coups signed by Milan on freebies  included Cafu :star: Stam  Seedorf (swap deal) and Tomasson (his goal against Ajax alone is worth the transfer  )

But apart from Campbell, they were mostly gambles rather than coups.
Wenger knew how good the French trio were already so he knew what he was buying (plus, Pires was in his mid-20s then and chose us over Real Madrid). Anelka was a coup because we only paid 500k for him and made a profit of 22.5m. Bergkamp a coup because he was a world class European player who came to a club who was heading for relegation when he could've gone anywhere.

Stankovic for 2 million?

Nedved something like that also....

Also Red Star in 1990, signing the likes of Pancev, Stojkovic, Mihajlovic, Prosinecki, Savicevic, Belodedic over two seasons to create team of champions....

just to clarify, what do you all consider to be a coup?

i would have thought it's if you sign a famous player from under everyone elses noses, without paying more or offering a massive contract etc. Surely signing an unknown prospect who turns out to be good isn't really a coup in the transfer sense, because it's not something that has been achieved using force, guile etc to beat out other rival clubs.
