14 April 2002 (Teamtalk) -- Crystal Palace are claiming that US international defender Gregg Berhalter has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a groin injury.

The surprising statement came ahead of the U.S. friendly with the Republic of Ireland on Wednesday night. Berhalter has been selected by States boss Bruce Arena for the match.

So far the USSF have not given any indiction that the American defender has been ruled out of the squad, but Berhalter did fail to make Palace's first team for the 2-0 win over Preston on Saturday, when he was expected to make the bench.

Confirmation from U.S. officials should come tomorrow, should Berhalter report to the Federation that he will be unable to link up with the American squad in Dublin next week.

Otherwise, Berhalter could make the trip in the hope that the U.S. medical staff can ease the reported groin problem, and allow him to take his place in the U.S. defense.

Berhalter could have played his last match for Palace after being placed on the transfer list earlier in the year. The English First Division season ends next Sunday.
