2-0 to Belgium.

Can't see the Tunisians even picking up a point and even scoring a goal for that matter.

World Cup Preview: Tunisia V Belgium
Tunisia - Belgium | News Archive

Belgium after all three points (Allsport)
06/09/2002. BACKGROUND

Tunisia showed signs of encouragement in their 2-0 defeat against Russia in their opening match of the World Cup. The African Nation arguably deserved a point from the match and that should give them confidence as they prepare for the clash with Belgium on Monday.

Tunisia's chances had been dismissed by just about everybody after preparing for the World Cup with a host of dire performances and results, but they took the match to Russia and were only beaten by a goalkeeping error and a slightly harsh penalty, as well as some bad luck at the other end of the pitch.

Qualification has never been a realistic ambition for Tunisia, but avoiding finishing on zero points has to be their priority and if they can pick up a point against Belgium it will at least give them something to play for going into their final match against Japan.

Morale is not sky high by any means for Belgium : coach Robert Waseige is under fire from the Flemish press for allegedly making the wrong tactical choices. His decision to field Eric Van Meir against Japan is under close scrutiny: the media can't believe a player as slow as Van Meir was fielded against the fiery Japanese forwards. Belgium conceded two goals in which defence was clearly at fault, which proves the press may have a point. This however had quite an impact on the Belgian camp's atmosphere. Robert Waseige is furious to have been openly criticized in the media and his press conferences are now held in a very tense climate.

FORM GUIDE

Tunisia's poor goalscoring record has been well documented, but against Russia they looked more than capable of getting the ball in the net and with a bit more luck and conviction upfront they would have done so. However, the last time Tunisia won a full international was December last year, although they did record victories against three club sides in the build-up to the World Cup.

TEAM NEWS

Tunisia are at full strength after Emir Mkademi and Hatem Trabelsi recovered from knocks. Besiktas' Zoubeir Baya was surprisingly left out of Tunisia's opener, but should return at the expense of Ali Zitouni.

Finally some light at the end of the corridor for Waseige: Glen De Boeck looks certain to find his place again in central defence, while Nico Van Kerckhoven could also be available after fighting off a knee injury. Waseige will probably field a more daring formation against puny Tunisia. Wilmots, Verheyen and Sonck, Belgium's best attacking assets, could all be starting the match. A win would set the stage for a dramatic finale against temperamental side Russia in the group's last match. Peter Van Der Heyden should stay in the starting line-up after hitting his first international goal against Japan.

PROBABLE LINEUP

5-3-2: Boumnijel; Bouzaine, Badra, Jaidi, Mkacher, Trabelsi; Baya, Gabsi, Benachour; Sellimi, Jaziri.

4-4-2: De Vlieger, De Boeck, Van Der Heyden, Peeters, Van Buyten, Simons, Goor, Verheyen, Walem, Wilmots, Sonck

WHO IS HOT

Ziad Jaziri: The striker certainly worried Russia and his performance deserved a goal. A run in the team from the domestic based striker is exactly what Tunisia need as they were without Jaziri and their other two main strikers for the African Nations Cup bid earlier this year. Slim Benachour is just 20-years-old and is the youngest player in Tunisia's squad, yet he was their most potent attacking threat and will worry the Belgium's fragile defence.

Belgium: Van Der Heyden ?Quite a goal he scored against Japan with a fine lob. People will remember Marc Wilmots overhead kick for years to come, but the Bruges defender's clever chip was even more precious to keep Belgium in the race for the next round.

WHO IS NOT

Ali Boumnijel: The inexperienced goalkeeper let his team down badly against Russia with a woefully slack throw, which gifted the Eastern Europeans the lead in what had been an even encounter.

Wesley Sonck: He has a point to prove. Matches have gone by and still he has not scored with the same fluency as in the Jupiler League. This must be amended as soon as possible and pressure will be great to see him achieve constituency in front of the adverse goal on the World Stage.

PAST ENCOUNTERS

Just a meaningless friendly match between the two some eight years ago. Tunisia won 2-1. Shape of things to come?

Belgium were unlucky to have so many injuries. But atleast Waseige could have chosen some more tecnical players or atleast 1 natural forward. All they got is a bunch of tall, physical, slow guys who can't do much to entertain the audience nor create many chances.

After we already scored the most boring halmf on this WC (1e half against Japan) we now also gain the most horrible match soo far :proud:

2 games played, against 2 teams we normally should win from any time. And only 2 draws. If that's all you cna you don't deserve to go to the 8-finals.

BTW yes Tunisia should have had a penalty short after their goal when mastermind Deflandre tackled the foot of a Tunsian player.
