The team:

Iraizoz
Azpilicueta-Javimar-Laporte-Monreal
Iturraspe-Alonso
Susaeta-Herrera-Muniain
Llorente

Decent team, guess quarter finals would be achievable and then anything could happen...

Does Laporte have any ethnic Basque roots (parents/grandparents?), or does he only play for Athletic because he played youth ball in Bayonne and Lezama? Because Agen, his hometown, is not in the Basque Country.

If so, oddly enough, that would make him eligible for Athletic because of the relaxed cantera policy, but not for the Euskadi XI, right? I figure that's why Griezmann isn't on this list. Antoine played youth ball for Erreala, which makes him eligible for Athletic, but he's not actually Basque.

Anyone have the answer? Otherwise, here are my teams with and without Laporte (both managed by Ernesto Valverde):

WITH AYMERIC:

Stéphane Ruffier

César Azpilicueta - Javi Martínez - Aymeric Laporte - Nacho Monreal

Ander Iturraspe - Xabi Alonso

Markel Susaeta - Ander Herrera - Iker Muniain

Fernando Llorente

SUBS: Gorka Iraizoz, Andoni Iraola, Iñigo Martínez, Mikel Rico, Raúl García, Asier Illarramendi, Aritz Aduriz

WITHOUT AYMERIC:

Stéphane Ruffier

César Azpilicueta - Javi Martínez - Iñigo Martinez - Nacho Monreal

Ander Iturraspe - Xabi Alonso

Markel Susaeta - Ander Herrera - Iker Muniain

Fernando Llorente

SUBS: Gorka Iraizoz, Andoni Iraola, Carlos Gurpegi, Mikel Rico, Raúl García, Asier Illarramendi, Aritz Aduriz

I think either team could be good enough to make it out of the group stage with ease.

I did cheat a bit and pick 3 Central Defenders and 1 holding Midfielder?
My thought was to play JaviMar in Midfield with Alonso but still not taking away from our Defensive capabilities!

Iraizoz

Azpilicueta - I.Martinez - Laporte - Monreal

J.Martinez - Alonso

Susaeta - Herrera - Muniain

Llorente

In answer to your question Urzaiz20 I Think I read somewhere that Laporte has a Grandmother of Basque descent? But I don't know 100%!!

The question about eligibility for a country is complex as is everything with F.I.F.A. There is the Grandparent or Residence rules! Also a player can play for a new Country even if he has played a full International for another Country? As in the players who played for the old Yugoslavia who went on to play for Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia or Macedonia, ie in theory say Gonzalo Higuain who I believe has Basque grandparents could opt to play Euskal Selekzioa? and on the Residency rule in regard to Antoine Griezmann several of the current Swiss national team are there on the rule. So if ever the Euskal Selekzioa became a full F.I.F.A member I would hope they would pick the strongest team they could under F.I.F.A rules and who wanted to play for the Green, White & Red!!!
