The Basque team has it's own NT, although it is not allowed to qualify for official tournaments. Basque players play those tournaments representing other teams such as Spain, France or Venezuela.

It is really surprising how everytime we do this poll in the last years we only have 2-3 goalies who are regulars in Primera (Iraizoz and Ruffier, Almunia used to be but no longer, due to age). It's true Aranzubia might be consider a basque goalie and that would leave us with 3 decent goalies for the NT, but still..

The lack of first level basque goalies contrasts with historical data, there always around 10 basque goalies in Primera teams, and some of the best in history of the sport were basque: Iribar, Arkonada, Lezama, Carmelo, Zubizarreta etc.

Refering to Erreala, they don't produce a first level goalie since Alberto (and he is 44 now you know..), Riesgo is not even one third of what he was supposed to be. Bravo is a very good goalie and therefore it is difficult to shine with him in place. Even though Zubikarai is a decent keeper, I think he would have trouble to be starter in almost any team in Primera. Plus, he is always protagonist in the list of the stupidiest goals of the season, even if sometimes it's not his fault.

In Athletic we've produced more primera goalies in the same years (Imanol Etxeberria, Lafuente, Aranzubia, Iraizoz and now it seems Iago), plus having Armando for some years. But still, the analysis can't be positive. From all these, Aranzubia was a rollercoaster of form and mental strenght, and Gorka, the best of all, had to make himself a name in Gernika/Eibar/Espanyol because Lezama trainers said he was not good enough.

In the last years we've had lots of projects of great goalies who have failed (so far): Escalona, Mandaluniz, Aitor Fernández, Raúl Fernández. All performing nowadays at a clear lower level than expected. Funnily enough, the one who is closer to first level football, Iago Herrerin, was also discarded back in the day (as Gorka) to leave place for all these who have failed (so far, some are still young).

Nowadays, there are big hopes in 3 young basque goalies: Arrizabalaga, Bardaji and Remiro. Hopefully they will develop into top keepers and basque football will reign again in the goal.

I voted for the 3 goalies who are playing top football quite regularly at the moment: Iraizoz, Ruffier and Irureta.
