The initial news leaked just as England's friendly with Czech Republic was about to start at Wembley on Wednesday evening.

And the FA has now confirmed that Barwick, who played a key role in the appointment of former England manager Steve McClaren and current boss Fabio Capello, will step down on 31st December this year.

Barwick was appointed chief executive in November 2004 before officially taking up the role the following January, and he has admitted his disappointment at leaving the position.

"I am sad to be leaving the FA - an organisation it has been a privilege to lead - but I believe it is in the best interests of all parties," said Barwick
