English Premiership champion Manchester United is poised to sign France goalkeeper Fabien Barthez from Monaco.

The 28-year-old Barthez agreed a six-year contract with United, although it gave no details of the transfer fee. Recent newspaper reports said Barthez would cost about 10 million pounds ($15.5 million), a world record for a goalkeeper.

Barthez, who played for France in Sunday's 2-0 friendly victory over Croatia in Zagreb, flew to England on Monday for a medical.

United has struggled to replace Danish international Peter Schmeichel, who joined Portugal's Sporting Lisbon 12 months ago after eight seasons at Old Trafford.

Although United signed Australian Mark Bosnich from Aston Villa on a free transfer and Italian Massimo Taibi from Venezia for 4 million pounds, Bosnich suffered injury problems and lapses in form, and Taibi was loaned back to Italy after making a number of high-profile mistakes.

Dutchman Raimond Van der Gouw, 37, played the last few matches of the season, including the Champions League quarterfinal defeat by Real Madrid that ended United's hopes of retaining European club soccer's prestigious trophy.
