Barcelona's football, basketball and handball teams will all enjoy a pre-season stay at the Atletion complex in Aarhus, Denmark.


The three squads will be preparing for the 2005-2006 seasons by using the modern facilities at the Atletion complaex, which has everything that all the players will require. The trip coincides with Barca's project to spread its name in northern Europe.

Football

From July 20 to 25, the football team will play two friendlies in Aarhus' stadium, that holds around 20,000 spectators. The first match will be against AGF, a club that is celebrating 125 years since it helped found the Danish Super League in 1880. Barca met AGF in competitive competition when they played them in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1989. The opponents for the second leg have yet to be confirmed.

Basketball

The basketball team is still finalising the details of the pre-season stay in Aarhus. The plan is stay there from the end of August and the start of September. During this time they will play two friendly games, one of which will be against the Danish national team. The other match is yet to be confirmed. The games will take place in the Atletion Pavilion, which holds 4,850 people.

Handball

Barca's handball squad will stay at the complex from August 20 until 28. They will play three games in the Paviliion, the first of which will be against Aarhus GF, a side that was founded three years ago after four clubs merged.

Catalunya in Aarhus


Aarhus is the second largest city in Denmark with a population of 295,000, who all enjoy an enterprising, dynamic way of life. The metropolis is situated on the Jutland peninsula in the north of the country and is constantly engaging growing culturally and economically.

With the construction of the modern sports complex, built by the Aarhus Stadium and the Atletion, the city is now number one for sport in Denmark.

The visit of the three Barcelona teams will help promote the Catalan culture, a project that involves different musical and artistic events and the introduction of the cuisine.

The Spanish embassy in Copenhagen is helping to organise exhibitions of Catalan culture, with visits from artists, musicians, singers, ballet dancers along with the best Catalan chefs cooking in local restaurants. Also, the Hispanic-Danish Chamber of Commerce will introduce top quality Catalan products into local shops.

Opponents for handball too


Aarhus GF, who will play Xesco Espar's side, was founded three years ago when four of Denmark's biggest clubs merged. The reason was to produce a top class team for the country. The team have become strong having finished fifth and seventh in the Danish league.

One years ago, Erik Veje Rasmussen, was hired as coach and he is regarded as one of the best trainers in the world and was given the mandate to finish in the top four. The team is currently made up of numerous up-and-coming players and experienced internationals like Iceland's Robert Gunnarson and Sturla Asgeirsson. They also have players with great calibre like Jan Paulsen and Bilal Suman, who has played in the Asobal League.

During the 2003-04 season Aarhus GF played in the EHF Cup, earning good international experience.


The Gymnastic Association of Aarhus (AGF) will be Barca's first opponents in the pre-season build-up. The two sides have met before when they played in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1989.


AGF were founded on September 26, 1880 and is one of the oldest sports clubs in Denmark. The club has many sports and teams an its umbrella with Football, swimming, handball, gymnastics, tennis, basketball and athletics all included. The football team started in 1902 and plays in the Atletion Stadium.

A popular club

The club is one of the biggest and most popular in Denmark. They first won the league title in 1954-55 and have been champions five times in their history, the last coming in 1986. They ahve also won the Danish Cup nine times, the last being in 1996.

AGF are the only side to have played in the Danish First Division since the league turned professional 28 years ago. They have also played the most games of any club.

The team has played a total of 52 games in the European Cup Winners' Cup and met such big names as Barcelona (1989), Benfica (1987 and 1961), Celtic (1965 and 1983), Nantes (1997) and Steaua Bucharest (1992).

Atletion's modern facilities



The Atletion Sports Complex is located in a superb enviroment as it is surrounded by forest in an area two kilometres from the city of Aarhus. The facilities there are said to be state-of-the-art and ideal for all types of sport.

The Aarhus football and handball teams play at the Atletion and is also the headquarters for Team Denmark.

For more than 80 years, Atletion has been highly regarded as a sports venue and a cultural centre. After huge renovations the new sports complex, the Atletion Arena, has numerous sports grounds, all of which are linked internally. Also in the complex are a large number of rooms for conferences and VIP and press activities.

Atletion Stadium

The Atletion Stadium, built in 1920, is now a modern building that can hold 20,000 spectators. The grass pitch is considered to be the best in the country. In the past few years teams such as Manchester United, Manchester City, Feyenoord, Spartak Moscow and Villarreal have all played there. During the 1980's and 90's Barcelona, Celtic, Bayern Munich, Steaua Bucharest, Benfica, Nantes and Twente all played competitive games in the stadium.

Atletion Arena

The Atletion Arena was built in 2001 in a style based on Roman amphitheatres and holds 4,850 people. It is an ideal venue for indoor sporting events and cultural meetings. The changing rooms can hold 200 people and have a massage room and a sauna and all the latest facilities that any top sports person could want.
