Flora aim to turn giant-killing tables on Basel

FC Basel 1893 caused perhaps the surprise of last season by knocking out Manchester United FC but Estonia's FC Flora Tallinn are hoping to give the Swiss champions a shock of their own.
Read moreJust two nights after the UEFA European Under-19 Championship concluded in Estonia, big-time football returns to the Lilleküla Stadium as FC Flora Tallinn welcome FC Basel 1893 in the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round.

This time last year Flora ran eventual UEFA Europa League group stage contenders Shamrock Rovers FC close with a 1-0 aggregate loss; Basel, of course, pipped Manchester United FC to the 2011/12 round of 16. However, former Estonia goalkeeper Mart Poom, Flora's sporting director, is up for the challenge. "It's not a big misfortune that we have to play against Basel," Poom said. "It's just a big challenge. We should produce a disciplined display and score at least one goal."

Flora coach Martin Reim has similar ambition. "Our opponents are very strong, but we should gain a result which will leave us with chances to fight on in Switzerland," he told UEFA.com. "We need to prove we are worthy opponents. It's not just about playing good football. It's about decent results, it's about the win. We will see if we have enough quality for that."

Although Estonia were beaten three times at the U19 finals, won eventually by Spain, the experience proved useful for several Flora players, not least the two outstanding members of the host team: Karl-Eerik Luigend and Karol Mets. "They are both in good shape and might have a place in the starting XI on Tuesday," Reim said. "They were not bad at all against the best young players in Europe, but let see what they can do against the strongest senior players."

Basel's run last season and three straight Swiss titles certainly puts them in that category, and they began their 2012/13 fixtures on Friday with a 1-0 win at Servette FC. "I've seen footage of their matches," Reim said. "They opened their Swiss league campaign and I know what to expect. They are not on their top form at the moment. It was pointless to watch their matches against United again. Everything will be totally different this time."

Flora are four points behind Estonian league leaders JK Nõmme Kalju after 18 games and have had some financial worries but Reim is confident the team will put those to one side. "Yes, we have some issues but it won't be a problem," he said. "UEFA Champions League matches are very special, so we think now only about the coming games against Basel. We will do our best and won't talk about anything else.

"I played against very good clubs and national teams in the past, but I haven't ever met such strong opponents as a coach," added Reim, capped 157 times by Estonia. "The main thing is to believe in our strengths and not to be afraid. If we do so, anything is possible."

Žalgiris prepare for emotional return to Europe

A rejuvenated VMFD Žalgiris return to European competition on Thursday in a game with special resonance for Arminas Narbekovas

by Vaidotas Januška
from Vilnius

Having played for both clubs, Arminas Narbekovas admitted he cannot choose between VMFD Žalgiris and VfB Admira Wacker Mödling ahead of their second qualifying round tie.

Named Lithuania's Golden Player in 2003, Narbekovas has fond memories of his time as a key member of the great Žalgiris side which interrupted the Russian/Ukrainian dominance of the Supreme Soviet League by finishing third in 1987. They therefore became the first Lithuanian team to play in UEFA club competition, meeting FK Austria Wien in the 1988/89 UEFA Cup.

"It was an important event both from a sporting and personal perspective, since the competition was completely new for us," Narbekovas told UEFA.com. "We also had the chance to represent Lithuania, which was always special in those days. To face any team from abroad was something extraordinary and Austria Wien had players such as ex-Inter and Roma midfielder Herbert Prohaska."

Žalgiris upset the odds by winning the first leg 2-0 and went ahead in the return, before eventually falling to a 5-4 aggregate defeat. "We were not the favourites, but it was still disappointing," added Narbekovas, who ended up joining Austria Wien in 1990. "Maybe we were over-confident with the three-goal lead. I could have not imagined we could concede four times, let alone five."

More than two decades later, Žalgiris will once again meet Austrian opposition, this time on their UEFA Europa League debut. It represents an occasion few will relish as much as assistant coach Mindaugas Čepas, a man who links the club's past with the present. He has been there since 2004, when injury forced him to end his playing career, and was on the coaching staff during Žalgiris's last European campaign, when they reached the UEFA Intertoto Cup semi-finals in 2005.

Čepas was head coach during Žalgiris's lowest ebb, when financial troubles caused the club to start afresh from the second tier. "We could only think of how to survive and keep the name of Žalgiris on the football map," he added. "We had no idea we could be back to European football so soon. Now that we have made it, I can say that anything is possible. You just need a lot of belief and desire."

Now assistant to Damir Petravić, Čepas is eagerly anticipating Thursday's home leg against Admira. "It will be a special day for the club, for all our fans and all football lovers in the capital Vilnius," he said. "We have spent a lot of time preparing for this match and analysing the opponents. Admira are a strong side who play fast, attacking football. For us it's crucial not to concede at home and get a good result."

It might, therefore, be wise to take a word of advice from Narbekovas, who spent several seasons at Admira and believes the tie is 50-50. "A lot depends on the first match," he said. "Žalgiris have not been very stable this year so it's vital for them to build a solid foundation before the away leg."

Skonto didn't look good until the final 5-10 minutes when they probably should have scored. Though on Croatian TV they said Skonto sold a lot of players and are using a very young, inexperienced squad this season
