You gotta think with Cannavaro back in shape he will find his game again. But alot of the other guys are getting old.

Stick Chiellini, Grosso, and hopefully Santacroce (he's supposed to be the next Nesta) can get some experience and play with the the guys. That doesn't look like a bad defense at all.

What does everyone think of Santacroce? Who else are some of the younger guys that might make an impact on the back line?

Well Gamberini must be mentioned as a good name for our defence. Then we have some solid defenders for the qualification even if nothing spectacular. I dont think Barzagli is as bad as he is playing now... his confidence is shot to pieces, but even he can still be a good defender, I think he needs a rest from the NT though and let him concentrate on his football in Germany.

Azzurri, have a solid albeit unspectecular defence even at the Euros the defence wasn't a problem. Lippi has to bring in the young guys in attack and midfield. There are a lot of options but the question remains if they'll be ready in 2010.

I think for you guys Santacroce Chiellini Ferrari. He has always been a good defender. And that dude who was next to Ferrari today also looked abit special. The youngster. I think he belongs to Juve....not sure but he was gold today also

Canna Ferrari Santacroce Chiellini. Canna Chiellini starters. Or maybe Canna Santacroce with Chiellini playing at left back but i dunno if his offense matches that of Grosso or Zambrotta at left back.

Gamberini is consistent but i cant say he is Nesta class. Chiellini may reach that level as could Santacroce. Ferrarri has always been an excellent defender if you ask me

IMO our best 2 CB are Chiellini and Gamberini. Cannavaro is not the same player and Santacroce is not at their level yet and I dont get why you keep calling him the next Nesta considering they are nothing alike. He is more similar in style to Cannavaro

Anyways, I think we are alright at CB for the moment and for the future with Gamberini, Chiellini and Santacroce (I think Cannavaro along with these 3 should be called up for the next qualifiers as long as they are all fit) And hopefully Criscito develops into as good a CB as I think he can be. And then there are guys like Bovo, Legrottaglie and Bonera who if we have too many injuries can fill in and do a good enough job, hopefully

I think Mexes is overrated and a **** up too often, but he is CLEARLY better then Ferrari. There isnt even a debate, and Ferrari has some nice qualities, but you and me and everyone knows he hasnt been using them hardly since forever, and been more busy with his brain farts.

And Santacroce is really talented, but slow the **** down. He has barely even played more then half a season so far. Gamberini has been stellar for a full season, and shouldnt be displaced just based on hype for Santacroce.

Not true at all. I don't think I've seen a single Roma fan here on XT or on the Roma board I visit who thinks Ferrari is better. Maybe there are a few, but they certainly a minority.

Santacroce could very well become the best defender in the world--only if he tightens up mentally. Right now he gambles a bit too much, relaying on his phenomenal athleticism to make up for any short comings. Once he cuts down the fouls and positions himself better he will become world class.

Criscito still needs to add more muscle and become a more powerful players. Right now he plays a bit too hesitantly, realted to his lack of power. Once he has the physical tools--they better come soon--it will be a question of whether he will develop the confidence required to have a killer instinct. Despite these short comings he is absolutely beautiful on the ball.

By the way, what happened to Masiello of Juventus? I remember he was really good on the ball as well.

I cant see Masiello being in Serie B much longer. Especially from his days as a youth he was class. Anyway the defence of Italy doesnt seem so bad anymore. Stop mentioning Bonera! The defence does seem bad when he is mentioned. He is doing fine but he is not a good central defender or right back.

Nah hes not good, despite the fact he has clearly being very good for Milan while they have several defenders absent and consider that he is having to hold up the defence with Favalli there too p Bonera is just one of those very under-rated players because of some mistakes he made in his career. The guy has been good for Milan everytime I see him play and has basically been getting better year on year.
