Serie A Week 17 - 6/1/04 (15.00)
Atalanta - Fiorentina

Stadio Azzurri d'Italia

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atalanta hope to start 2005 with their first victory of the campaign, but they are the underdogs against fellow new boys Fiorentina. Both these clubs were promoted from Serie B in the summer with wildly differing experiences.

The Orobici are still without a win, making this their worst ever start to a top-flight season, while the Viola are currently battling for UEFA Cup spots. The arrival of new Coach Delio Rossi has so far failed to lift their fortunes, though the home side does have a game in hand to play against Messina later this month.

Rossi is forced to do without the suspended Michele Marcolini and injured Igor Budan, but Demetrio Albertini is set for his comeback from a thigh strain. It’s going to be an all-Under-21 front three with Riccardo Montolivo, Lazzari and Giampaolo Pazzini.

Fiorentina have not quite delivered on their travels this season, picking up just one point from their last three away games, including a 6-0 drubbing at Milan. Cristian Maggio is suspended for this trip to Bergamo, with goalkeeper Cristiano Lupatelli, Martin Jorgensen, Gianni Guigou and Luca Ariatti also sidelined.

Considering his fine performance in the 2-0 win over Chievo – scoring his first Serie A goal, hitting the woodwork and setting up another for Christian Riganò – it’s likely Javier Portillo has done enough to earn another rare start. This leaves question marks over Fabrizio Miccoli’s position and that of the disappointing Hidetoshi Nakata.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atalanta (probable): Taibi; Rivalta, Sala, Natali, Bellini; Zenoni, Albertini, Bernardini; Montolivo, Lazzari, Pazzini

Fiorentina (probable): Roccati; Ujfalusi, Viali, Dainelli; Di Livio, Obodo, Maresca, Chiellini; Nakata, Portillo; Riganò

Play Nakata ahead of Miccoli? Are you having a f***ing joke?

Can't see Di Livio lasting 90 minutes either, as much as I love the guy.

Fantini, Riganò, Portillo

Looks like almost perfect. With Miccoli on bench we have great attack options.

Atalanta 1 - 0 Fiorentina

Budan 85 (A)

Stadio Azzurri d'Italia

Atalanta start 2005 with their first win of the season, as a disappointing Fiorentina are defeated by Igor Budan's late goal.

Delio Rossi's men hadn't scored in their last six games and were hit by the absence of suspended midfielder Michele Marcolini, but Demetrio Albertini returned from a long injury lay-off. The Viola had Maggio out and Fabrizio Miccoli struggling with a tendon problem, so Javier Portillo again started alongside Christian Rigano'.

The visitors had the first chance after a couple of minutes, as Massimo Taibi spilled Enrico Fantini's effort and Portillo was unable to make the most of the loose ball.

Savini's handling offence on Giampaolo Pazzini's cross was considered to be involuntary, while Rigano's finish after a well-worked team move left something to be desired.

Atalanta had a very good scoring opportunity on 53 minutes, as Pazzini held up the ball for Zenoni and goalkeeper Roccati bravely rushed off his line to smother the shot from six yards.

It was substitute Igor Budan who marked his comeback after a knee operation with a goal. William Viali's error allowed the Croat to get hold of the ball and thump it past Roccati with just five minutes to go. It was the first goal Atalanta had scored in six games.

Fabrizio Miccoli's free kick nearly drew level moments later, but Taibi was just able to push it out at the near post.

Atalanta: Taibi; Rivalta, Sala, Natali, Bellini; Zenoni, Albertini (Mingazzini 82), Migliaccio; Montolivo; Lazzari, Pazzini (Budan 68)

Fiorentina: Roccati; Viali, Ujfalusi, Savini, Di Livio (Valdes 83); Chiellini, Obodo, Maresca, Fantini; Riganò, Portillo (Miccoli 75)

These thing happen above all in serie A. You can never underrate an opponent, never! I remember Empoli defeating both Milan and Inter at San Siro in the same season.
