Noticed that there was no thread for the Asian confederation of qualifying. Only 2-3 more matches to go over there but its still pretty tight minus Japan running away with Group B

Group A is the tightest group with 4 teams competing for the top two spots. South Korea earned an important 2:1 victory at home over Qatar with a 96th minute winner. Uzbekistan are currently playing Lebanon at home at a win will see them top the group. Iran don't play this matchday

Group A
1 South Korea......5G 3W 1D 1L 11:5 +6 10
2 Uzbekistan........5G 2W 2D 1L 5:4 +1 8
-----------------------------------------------------------
3 Iran.................5G 2W 1D 2L 2:2 0 7
-----------------------------------------------------------
4 Qatar...............6G 2W 1D 3L 4:7 -3 7
5 Lebanon...........5G 1W 1D 3L 2:6 -4 4

Group B meanwhile sees Japan running away with it, already able to qualify in March with 2 games to spare. The rest of the teams keep drawing. Australia only drew at home to Oman today and were actually losing 2:0 at one point. Australia close with two home matches so they should still be able to qualify despite a poor generation of players

Group B
1 Japan..............5G 4W 1D 0L 13:2 +11 13
2 Australia..........5G 1W 3D 1L 6:6 0 6
----------------------------------------------------------------
3 Oman..............6G 1W 3D 2L 6:9 -3 6
--------------------------------------------------------------------
4 Iraq.................5G 1W 2D 2L 4:5 -1 5
5 Joran...............5G 1W 1D 3L 4:11 -7 4

The top 2 in each group automatically qualifies for the 2014 World Cup. The third-placed teams in each group play a two-legged playoff in September. The winner of that playoff faces the 5th place CONMEBOL team in a playoff

Australia almost shot themselves in the foot this morning against Oman, but came back from 0-2 behind, should even have won if it wasn't for Al Habsi stopping all but one effort from Cahill.

Would be nice to see Iraq or Oman get 2nd spot.
Australia really do seem talentless nowadays.

Iran - experts in 0-0s? 5 games, just 2 goals for and against

Therefore they cannot shift in a fifth gear.

Japan miss an opportunity to qualify already but they are in no danger despite losing to Jordan. Jordan jumps ahead of Australia and Oman for now before three match dates in June. Australia have to go to Japan on the first one but then have two home games against Jordan and Iraq

Uzbekistan beat Lebanon 1:0 at home and are in first place in their group, one point ahead of South Korea.

I see Uzbekistan/South Korea from group A qualifying. Uzbekistan had a nice youth World Cup a year or two ago, their future looks bright.

I also think Japan and Oman (as a shocker) qualifying from Group B.

Tough to say who will get in the playoffs, but I'll go with Qatar vs Australia, with Australia winning that and the CONMEBOL playoff to barely qualify.

Japan only need a draw at home tomorrow against Australia to become the first team to qualify for the World Cup.

Asian qualifying in fact concludes in two weeks

Japan needed a 90th minute penalty kick from Honda to get the draw needed to qualify for the World Cup against Australia. Good point for Australia who now shouldn't have trouble qualifying with two home games remaining. Either Oman or Iraq can still put some pressure on them with a win later today

Qatar vs. Iran
Lebanon vs. South Korea
Oman vs. Iraq

these are the three remaining matches today

Same problem as usual for Japan. They controlled possession but lacked edge at times, Maeda and Okazaki are in bad form, if they had a top quality striker it would make such a difference, a load of talent in midfield, but blunt up front.

Watching Honda and Kagawa combine at times was pure magic, though. If they want to do anything in Brazil this partnership will have to be on song.

Oman beat Iraq 1:0, the result practically eliminates Iraq from World Cup contention (they will probably have to win both their matches remaining) while Oman only have one match remaning but are in second place.

The Group A matches kickoff in the next couple of hours

Hajduk, while there seems to be a consensus that Japan has a stronger team and a better generation of players than Korea at the moment, one area perhaps where Korea may have the upper hand - imagine if you took Japan's midfield then added some of Korea's forward players such as Son Heung-min or Ji for instance, those guys are much better options than Maeda. And of course Korea would love to have Japan's options in the wingback position [Uchida, Nagatomo, Hiroki Sakai, Gotoku Sakai, etc].

Japan aside, it seems the rest of the top teams have regressed a lot.

The ones who qualified for 2006 and 2010 did so with rather ease, this time the obvious favorites Australia, Korea and Iran are all having problem distancing themselves from the rest at this late stage.

I don't think the rest have caught up to them, the level of the games are quite poor.

Korea's finishing is terrible, I guess you can say unlucky but they have missed from point blank range multiple times. Lebanon holding on for dear life, wasting so much time in the process and hopefully the ref doesn't sugar coat the added time, should be minimum 5-6 mins
