English Premiership soccer club Arsenal said it signed Cameroon international Lauren Bisan-Etame Mayer from Spain's Real Mallorca for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old midfielder, known as Lauren in the Spanish Primera Liga, was voted player of the tournament after helping Cameroon win the 2000 African Nations Cup. He played 85 times for Mallorca, scoring five goals.

Lauren, who doesn't require a work permit because he holds a Spanish passport, is manager Arsene Wenger's first signing since Arsenal lost on penalties to Galatasaray in the UEFA Cup final 13 days ago.

``He is a versatile player, comfortable in both defence and midfield,'' Wenger said. ``Lauren possesses strong, physical power as well as great stamina.''

Lauren will join up with his new teammates for pre-season training in July.
