these lists are primarily based on club form...Sergio Aguero had an inconsistent injury-ridden year while Tevez only started hitting strides at the end of the year...Mauro Boselli is in there for being a major protagonist for Estudiantes in the Copa Libertadores championship...ditto Veron

Most Improved Player of the Year:
1. Gonzalo Higuain = from a poor finisher to a cold-blooded one
2. Ever Banega = from a reckless prima-dona to a world class regista (Italian term)
3. Diego Buonanotte = from a moody dribbler to a complete player (passing, free kicks, team play)

Forerunners for next year's edition:
usual suspects + Ever Banega, Angel Di Maria and Javier Pastore

my choice for player of the year 2009 is Lionel Messi. I think he has no competition seriously.

Defender of the year:

Samuel won the Serie A.
Ansaldi won the Russian league and also put in a string of good performances in the CL.
JZ also played as a midfielder.

My choice is Christian ANSALDI. (If I had not got to watch him play the CL, then I would have voted for Samuel.)

Midfielder of the Year:
Cambiasso- consistent in the Serie A but didn't prove himself in the CL.
Mascherano-Had some very bad times with Liverpool, but still nothing spectacular.
Lucho-Captained Porto to their 4th consecutive league title and he was at the heart of it. After a shaky start, he has also doing very well for Marseille.

My choice: Lucho Gonzalez.

Forward of the Year:

Milito: Scored a lot of goals for Genoa and then made a brilliant start for Inter despite the pressure.
Messi: Top-scoring Argentine in Europe.
Higuain: Finished the second of last season very well, but had a bad start to this campaign and also has found the CL very difficult. Not a finished material by any means as last night's match against Sevilla proves.
Licha: Goals dried up in the second half of last season for Porto. Though he made a bright start with Lyon, he has again found goals hard to come by. Very Average 2009.
Boselli: Haven't watched him play.

My Choice: Lionel Messi

Flops of the year:
First Place: Sergio Aguero (another Saviola??)
Second Place: Gago (Has completely lost it)
Third: Carlos Tevez (scored a total of around 8 or 9 Premier league goals in the entire year; even some defenders score that many goals)

Revelation of the Year:
Alejandro Dominguez.

Rejuvenated player of the year:
I would include Benega and Saviola here.

We can include another category called New Face of the Year.

New Face of the Year: Javier Pastore

Runner Ups: Matias De Federico and Nicolas Otamendi (too underrated and vilified, but is a great defender)

I really don't know about Tevez.
I love the guy but i think he doesn't have it to perform in the WC.
I mean 53 games and 8 goals (Wiki) isn't good for a striker.
Maybe he should play more like that:

Messi----------------Tevez-----------Di Maria
