Kangaroos captain Anthony Stevens is suing former teammate Wayne Carey for damages over an accident that almost killed him.

The Supreme Court action comes two months after Carey was forced to quit the Kangaroos over his affair with Stevens's wife, Kelli.

Stevens is suing Carey and the other former owners of the Redback Brewery Hotel in North Melbourne including Carey’s manager, Ricky Nixon, former teammate Anthony Rock and former Bulldogs star Doug Hawkins.

In the writ issued this week Stevens claimed his football career had been severely restricted as a result of the accident. He claimed the hotel had inadequate security and failed to control rowdy patrons who broke the window that caused his injuries.

Stevens received 50 stitches during emergency surgery after falling glass from a second-floor window at the hotel struck him in the face and neck in March 2000.

The glass sliced him from the corner of his mouth, across his cheek then down his neck to the top of his shoulder. He lost almost two litres of blood.
