Liverpool announced yesterday plans to build a 70k seater stadium next door to Anfield on Stanley Park. Its a 3year plan, but planning permission will be difficult. It would also mean moving even closer to Goodison Park.
I know the demand for ticket is higher than the supply at anfield. But is 70,000 too much for 20-30 home games per year. Would they raise the ticket prices if they moved? Some American Football teams have trouble selling out their 70,000 plus stadiums for only eight home games a year, but would have no problems selling out in a 45,000 seat stadium. 70,000 is a real big jump to maintain that kind of attendance for 20-30 games, unless the club offers cheeper tickets for the upper sections. I really would hate to see the atmosphere at anfield become stale and distant like Juve's home stadium, or even Bayern's.
The demand is there all right. Look at Celtic for example. The upgraded Celtic Park to 60,000 and its sold out every week. They need to put more seats in again. Although Celtic have a bigger support base than LFC, there is no reason why 70,000 should'nt be achievable every week.
BTW I've been in the Della Alpi (Juve's stadium) a few times and I've never found the atmosphere stale or flat.
