MAREK HAMSIK !

Napoli midfielder Marek Hamsik has been named Slovakia's best footballer in 2009.

The 22-year-old captain of the national team topped a poll of experts, coaches and sports journalists, when the results were announced late Monday.

Hamsik played a key role on a team that secured Slovakia qualification for the World Cup for the first time in its history.

Bochum forward Stanislav Sestak, the best Slovakia scorer in the World Cup qualifying campaign with six goals, was second in the poll and Legia Warsaw goalkeeper Jan Mucha third.

Chelsea attacking midfielder Miroslav Skoch, who is currently on loan at FC Twente in the Dutch league, was named as the best new player under 21.

It should have been Sestak without a doubt, no Sestak= no 1st WC for Slovakia
Sestak was better at international level, but Hamsik was better at club level. Either one would have deserved it.

Congrats to Marek.

Well, let's just say those were weak years in terms of young Slovak talent.

:D

Ivana is the biggest surprise, he looked quite good at that age.

Stevko was top-scorer of Slovak Corgonliga this year. However, him winning the award was more result of his controversy with U20 manager Pollak than his on-pitch performance.

Maybe you remember that story, Stevko accused U20 manager that he asked money for his call-up. Same coach was accused for requiring share from Tomas Brusko´s transfer to Dinamo Kyiv.

Stevko got some unfair treatment later, not only by youth NT´s managers but even by his club and media made tried to make him look as a martyr of slovak football mafia.

Later he was unable to proove himself and is very close to become a bust. OK he´s still only 26 but being sub in Senice isn´t really far away from falling into obscurity.

Same goes for Mucha, Hamšík, Škrtel, Zabavnik and other players but only one could win and I guess his success in Napoli was what decided.

Anyway Kajoo already wrote about Stevko, so I´ll take the Meszároš. If you remember, Meszároš was the one who deserved the price, he won the title with Slovan as 21 years old and he was also in the NT - he played well in Turkey but than the inujury came and he never fully recovered. Ivana...Ivana had potential but he wasted it.

Meszaros was brilliant in his first season for Slovan, as well as Palo Sedlak. His career was ruined by injuries.

Ivana´s form went downhill after joining Slavia and now he´s only shadow of himself from Synot era.

On the other hand, it didn't really hurt the national team that much, since we do have/had good/decent strikers. We needed better wingers and midfielders, so it's fantastic that we have Weiss, Stoch, and Hamsik for the next 10 years.
