The Super Eagles

Thank you Hunbird. I assume you know a fair amount already from 1994, the 1996 Olympics and the recent friendly against Scotland.

The Eagles are nowhere near as ready as Argentina at the moment as Nigeria's perennial organisation problems are hampering things. The coach is till experimenting whereas Bielsa already knows his strongest 11 and has probably already picked his 23 going to Korea/Japan.

At the moment, I think Argentina will be looking at how to stop Aghahowa and Ogbeche upfront. They have lightening speed, supoerb ball control and may give Chamot in particular, if he plays, a few problems. I watched your game against Cameroon and Germany and the team does look a bit vulnerable to the long ball. JJ Okocha will be loooking to exploit that with his exceelent delivery.

The only match I have ever seen the Super Eagles play was the 1996 Olympics match. I suppose they are the team we know the least about. But they come with a good reputation and none of the teams in this group is going to have an easy time.

This would be my starting line-up if I were the coach for the game against Argentina. I would use a 3-5-2 line-up to exploit the wide areas, that Cameroon used so effectively in the recent friendly. It also appears that without Ayala, the Argentine defence is suspect on arial balls. I would try get my striking force to try and take advantage of this. The team will also be solid in the middle because when Argentina break on the counter attack, the whole world is on trouble. You guys are red hot when it comes to a quick break.

Shorunmu (Lucrene)

Okpara (Liege)
West (Kaiserslauten)
Okoronkwo (Donetsk)

Yobo (Marsaille)
Oliseh (Dortmund)
Finidi (Ipswich)
Okocha (PSG)
Udeze (Salonika)

Aghahowa (Donetsk)
Ogbeche (PSG)

Did you watch the game against Scotland? There were a few too many new faces for me but I would be surprised if Argentine scouts were not following it closely. Did the Argentine papers and media not cover it?

The Argentina newspapers covered the match a little, but not extensively. Being in the United States, I don't get to see very much soccer on television.

Why are the team called the Super Eagles? Where does the name come from?

The Super Eagles

The Eagle is the national emblem of Nigeria, just as you have the Irish shamrock, the Welsh dragon, the English lion, the Chinese dragon or the Japanese sun.

Do you know any of the Nigerian players at all because we follow Argentine football with a religious zeal and if you visit the Nigerian website, oit is full of analysis about Veron, Lopez, Ortega, Cannigia, Aimar, Batistuta, Cannigia, Ayala, Chamot, Samuel etc. I suspect you guys know very few of the Nigerian players, including those like Taribo West, Celestine Babayaro, Nwankwo Kanu and Austin Okocha who play at the highest level.

I do know about those players you have mentioned ayoakinfe.

They are a tough and very skillful bunch.

We I saw Nigeria in 94 against us and I'm picking you guys as the 2nd team to make it out of the group with us because I know of your capabilities. Nigeria gave us alot of trouble in 94. Our defence will have a terrible time dealing with your attacks, i'm sure of it.

I think set pieces will be very important for us to improve on because I feel Nigeria is very good at beating out our defence to get their head on the ball. Strength is very important and Nigeria has alot of it.

Amoruso, what have the Germans done to you. That was very harsh my man. Take it easy my friend.

I do like Udeze because of his ability to go past people. I would advise Argentina not to ever leave him one on one with Jose Chamot. Defensively, Udeze is not as good as Celestine Babayaro but going forward he is great. I would only use Udeze as a wing back in a 3-5-2 formation and would not trust him in a flat back four.

You guys, however, have your own sprinters. The pace of Cannigia is still unbelievable despite him being 34.

One question, do you guys think Argentina will use a flat back four of play with three central defenders because I believe a 4-4-2 with Samuel and Ayala oin the middle will be virtually impregnable. However Bielsa knows best.

we play with 3 central defenders, with Pochettino most likely the right back, if Vivas recovers on time, then Chamot wonm't be going to the wc, we are all hoping for a speddy recovery for Vivas...

Quiz time

OK Utopia, I did not mean to say you guys know nothing about Nigerian footballers, I was just responsing to a request for information from someone who said he does not know that much about the team. Hopefully, this site will allow us to exchange ideas and find out more about the beautiful game.

Maybe it will help if we have a quiz series. Let us start off with this:

(1) Which Nigerian player was the leading goalscorer in the recent 2002 African Nations Championship?

(2) Which Nigerian striker plays for Germany's Schalke 04?

(3) Which Nigerian player scored against Argentina in the 1994 World Cup?

(4) Who were the three goalscorers for Nigeria in the 1996 Olympic final ?

(5) Which Nigerian midfielder currently play for Borrussia Dortmund?

(6) Which Nigerian footballer won the African Footballer of the year in 1998 and 2000?

(7) Which three Nigerian winger currently plays for Ajax of Amsterdam ?

(8) Who scored Nigeria's winning goal against Bulgaria in France 98?

(9) Who scored a penlaty for Nigeria during its recent 1-1 draw with Paraguay?

(10) Who is Nigeria's most expensive footballer ever?
