Alianza win delayed Peru championship decider

(Adds details)

LIMA, Feb 1 (Reuters) - Alianza Lima came from behind to beat 10-man Sporting Cristal 2-1 after extra time and win the 2003 Peruvian title more than two months after the championship was cancelled because of a player strike.

Striker Jefferson Farfan headed the winner one minute into extra time in Saturday's match to hand Alianza their 19th Peruvian first division title, 11th since 1952 in the professional era.

Jorge Soto had put Sporting ahead in the 27th minute with Roberto Silva equalising six minutes later.

Sporting were a man short from the 75th minute when their Argentine midfielder Norberto Araujo was sent off for a second bookable offence.

The championship was cancelled in late November after first division players, who had gone on strike over unpaid wages three weeks earlier, failed to reach an accord with the clubs to end the dispute. The dispute finally ended in early January.

Sporting, who won the first half of the two-stage championship, and Alianza, who had taken the highest number of points over both stages when the tournament was halted, played off for the title.

Both sides are in this year's South American Libertadores Cup starting on Tuesday with a third qualifier to emerge from a three-team tournament currently in progress between recent Copa Sudamericana winners Cienciano, Alianza Atletico and Bolognesi. Sporting are at home to Coritiba of Brazil in Group 9 in their first match on February 10. Alianza start at home to Brazil's Sao Paulo in Group 4 the following day.
