Olympiakos hero revels in the joy of six

Thursday 9th May 2002

Olympiakos forward Alekos Alexandris claimed his sixth successive title with the club was as good as the first after clinching success with a hat-trick against Aris. "When you have six children, you can't say that you love one more than another," he said.

Alexandris, who ended the season as the league's top scorer, is closing in on Panathinaikos legend Mimis Domazos' record of ten league winners' medals. Alexandris has won nine - three with AEK and six with Olympiakos.

Alexandris opened the scoring for Olympiakos against Aris after just two minutes, and when Nikos Papadopoulos put through his own goal quarter of an hour later, the title was as good as won.

Alexandris added another three minutes from the break, Predrag Djordjevic got the fourth, and Alexandris completed his hat-trick 11 minutes from time to leave him the Greek league's top scorer for the season with 19 strikes. Apostolis Liolidis got Aris' sole reply on 76 minutes to make it 5-1.

Team-mate and fellow member of all six of the Piraeus' team's title-winning sides Stelios Giannakopoulos was also delighted at coming out on top in the toughest league for years.

"We are completely deserving champions in the hardest championship for 15 years," boasted the midfielder. "With the latest win we showed we are the golden team. I am proud to have brought joy to the fans."

Olympiakos finished the season level on 55 points with local rivals AEK but clinched the title thanks to their superior head-to-head record.

Olympiakos' achievement was overshadowed as their fans clashed with the police at Athens airport.

An estimated 6,000 supporters travelled to the airport to greet the team returning from their 5-1 win, but the violence started when fans insisted on being allowed onto the tarmac where the plane had taxied to a halt.

Airport officials denied access and supporters responded with sticks and bottles, prompting police to use tear gas. Three policemen were injured in the clashes and five supporters detained, according to police.

Alexandris said he dedicated this championship to himself because many nights he couldn't sleep with the thought that Olympiakos may not be champion.
