Alaves have become the latest club in the queue to sign Dutch winger Jordi Cruyff after technical secretary Juan-Carlos Rodriguez confirmed the club were "weighing up" a bid.

Rodriguez said: "Cruyff is one of the possibilities. We have had conversations with him."

Alaves are looking to build up a competitive squad ahead of their first-ever European campaign. The club's president, Gonzalo Anton, has also met with the player and his agent Frannie Martin.

But the Primera Liga side will face stiff competition, most notably from Southampton, whose manager Glenn Hoddle is reportedly keen on bringing the former Barcelona star to The Dell.

Martin told the Daily Star in England: "Southampton have asked for a meeting and they are keen. We are also talking to two Spanish clubs and two other English clubs.

"We want Jordi to have as many choices as possible but he will make a definite decision soon."

Cruyff is available on a free transfer after his contract at Premiership champions Manchester United ran out this summer.

Jordi Cruyff has reached agreement with Alaves, ending talk of staying in England.

Cruyff had considered the option of remaining in The Premiership, with West Ham and Southampton amongst the clubs interested in offering him terms, but he has decided on a return to Spain.

The official unveiling of the signing is expected within the next few days, and Alaves are extremely proud to have secured the services of a player with such a high profile and reputation.

Agent Inaki Ibanez was believed to be instrumental in ensuring the deal was done, although early indications are that Cruyff may only sign a one-year contract with the club as he prefers a short-term agreement, in order to avoid a reptition of his stay in Manchester, as he grew frustrated with.
