Al-Ahly delight as Roma consent to friendly
Tuesday 18th June 2002
African champions Al-Ahly have confirmed that they will play a friendly against Italian giants Roma in early August.
Egyptian newspaper Al-Akhbar revealed on Tuesday that a local business arranged the fixture and claimed that the Serie A club have agreed to field a full-strength side. An exact date has not yet been confirmed.
110,000 Al-Ahly fans crammed into the Cairo International stadium to see their heroes beat European champions Real Madrid 1-0 in a similar showpiece match last summer. That game earned the club a record £2.7 million in gate receipts.
It will be the second time that Roma have played in the Egyptian capital in the last five years. The 2001 Italian champions held the Egyptian national team to a 2-2 draw in 1997 with Francesco Totti netting both of the visitors' goals.
Al-Ahly appointed former Holland international Arie Haan as their new coach on a one-year contract on Friday. Haan replaces Portuguese coach Carlos Manuel da Silva who lost out on the domestic title to Al-Ismaili last season.
