SEOUL, South Korea -- Jeff Agoos' difficult World Cup is over, ended by a calf injury.

The 34-year-old defender, injured in Friday night's 3-1 loss to Poland, will be sidelined for 4-to-6 weeks because of a strain in part of his calf muscle, the U.S. Soccer Federation said Saturday.

Agoos began the tournament with 130 international appearances, the most among players who had never appeared in the World Cup.

He scored an own goal in the opening 3-2 win over Portugal when he tried to clear the ball, but put it past goalkeeper Brad Friedel. Then, against South Korea, he was called for a foul in the penalty area -- Friedel saved the kick -- and was beaten to a header on the Red Devils' goal in a 1-1 tie.

In Friday night's defeat, he missed a header trying to clear a corner kick, leading to Poland's goal in the third minute, and was beaten to a pass that led to a score that put Poland ahead 2-0 in the fifth minute.

Agoos came out of the game in the 35th minute after sustaining the injury.

"We are very disappointed for Jeff,'' U.S. coach Bruce Arena said in a statement. "He has made an outstanding contribution to this team.''

Agoos, whose 133 appearances for the United States trails only Cobi Jones (157), is the second American defender to get hurt. Steve Cherundolo injured his right knee during practice last weekend and probably is sidelined through the end of the tournament.

Carlos Llamosa, Gregg Berhalter and Pablo Mastroeni appear to be the options to replace Agoos in Monday's game against Mexico. With left back Frankie Hejduk suspended after getting his second yellow card, David Regis becomes the favorite to take over that spot.

In 1994, Agoos was among the final cuts from the U.S. World Cup team and burned his uniform. Four years ago, he was on the team after leading the Americans in playing time during qualifying in 1997, but he didn't play in the tournament.

Boy, this is RICH ... NOW WHAT?

Llamosa?, I hope not. Don't forget, it was Llamosa who was beaten like a hated step child by BORGETTI when WE went to Mexico City during qualifying.

There isn't much to choose from between the two, Llamosa & Berhalter. Bruce will have a time picking a team to represent for US on Monday. Who would have thought that Frankie Hajduk would turn out to be so solid as to displace Regis. Lets hope Regis, Llamosa, Mastroeni and Berhalter are all READY TO PLAY, because I believe two of them will start.

USA, All the way.

I think that losing Agoos the way we did is terrible. I hate to see a guy who has waited so long to make it to the Cup get hurt. However he was killing us. I think Regis has everything to prove to Bruce, and that is a huge plus becuase he has to be thinking that if he plays well enough and we win , he maybe able to win his spot back. I have no worries at all of Pablo. i think he should have been a starter from the get go. Also dont forget the last time we played Mexico we played like crap , with the exception of eddie pope and pablo mastroeni. Another option is to put obrien at lest back earnie stewart at the central role and donovan and beasely on the flanks. Also another note Moore may not be available for the game , he pulled his hamstring in the game against poland. That is not final but that is what they said on abc after the england denmark game.
