With the exception of the highlight/full games on Eurosport of the games played in the african champions league I'm not too familiar with the level of football in African league's. But from what I've seen, it looks like the following countries always have some teams in the later stages of the tournemant:

- South Africa
- Morroco
- Egypt
- Ivory Coast
- DR Congo

Africa's Strongest Leagues are (in no specific order):

-South Africa
-Egypt
-Tunisia
-Morocco

Then you have:

-Ivory Coast
-Algeria
-Nigeria
-Ghana

In my opinion:

1) Egypt
2) Morocco
3) Tunisia

This is based on what seems to happen in African Cups.

I didn't wanna sound biased but I have to confess that the Egyptian league is indeed the strongets in Africa for many reasons:

1) Ahly is ranked first and Zamalek is ranked second in Africa's Clubs rankings.

2) Egyptian clubs hold the records for the Champions League and the cancelled Cup Winners Cup.

3) Ahly - Zamalek derby is one of the top 5 derbies worldwide according to Fifa.

4) The most important reason, Egypt just won the 2006 ACN with only three pro's in Europe, meaning 20 player in the squad play their football in Egypt. The fact that they were able to reign supreme vs players that play in some of the world's biggest clubs proves the strength of the Egyptian League.

PS. Back in 1998 when we won the ACN it was similar circumstances, with only 4 Euro based players so in general we have very talented players who still play their football in Egyptian clubs which proves the strenght of these clubs and hence the strength of the league.

Results wise.... Egyptian clubs have dominated the African club scene:

CAF Champions League, total winners by country

Egypt 10
Cameroon 5
Morocco 5
Algeria 4
Ghan 3
Guine 3
Zaire 3
Ivory Coast 2
Nigeria 2
Tunisia 2
Congo 1
South Africa 1

CAF Cup Winners Cup

Egypt 8
Tunisia 4
Cameroon 3
Nigeria 3
Ivory Coast 2
Zaire 2
Algeria 1
Guinea 1
Kenya 1
Morocco 1
South Africa 1
Sudan 1
Zambia 1

CAF Club rankings

1. Al Ahly (Egypt) 40 points
2. Zamalek (Egypt) 37
3. Ashante Kotoko (Ghana) 34
Canon de Yaoundé (Cameroon) 34
5. Espérance (Tunisia) 27
ASEC (Ivory Coast) 27
7. Hearts of Oak (Ghana) 26
8. Africa Sports (Ivory Coast) 25
9. JS Kabylie (Algeria) 22
10. TP Englebert (Congo-K.) 20 [now known as TP Mazembe]
11. ES Sahel (Tunisia) 19
Hafia (Guinea) 19
13. Shooting Stars (Nigeria) 18
14. Raja Casablanca (Morocco) 17
Ismaily (Egypt) 17
AS Vita Club (Congo-K.) 17
17. Al-Mokawloon (Egypt) 16
18. Nkana Red Devils (Zambia) 15

.... now entertainment wise.... thats dependent on each individual... plus, as we all know, entertainment is a relative thing.. A league can be entertaining because all teams are of equal strength, and hence its all close.. But on the continental scene, all the teams could be lesser than others..

IMO.. I'd rate them currently (not necessarily historically) as follows:

1. Egypt (Ahly, Zamalek, Ismaily have between them 18+ continental titles)
2. Tunisia (Esperance, Etoile, Sfaxien etc all top clubs)
3. Morocco (Rajaa, Wydad, FAR, all currently doing well)
4. South Africa (Ajax did very well last year in CL, plus Sundowns, Chiefs and Pirates are always top teams)
5. Algeria (JSK, USMA, etc)
6. Ghana (Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak are no easy teams)
7. Ivory Coast (ASEC, Africa Sport)

Personally, I like South African teams... One comment though.. when I see CL or CAF Cup matches played in South Africa, the crowd doesn't seem too intimidating (well, at least compared to what happens in the rest of Africa :D ).. You guys need to work on that.. ;)

True that.

I recall when we played Ajax last year in Cape Town, we had more fans than they did in the stands ! :eekani:

Not to mention the 2001 Champions League final first leg against Mamelodi Sundowns in Pretoria, the stadium was empty that day too...

That was one of the most shocking scenes honestly. I expected a cracking atmosphere before that game and was nervous for the effect it might have on our players but to my shocking surprise, it was empty :eekani:

Remove the Moroccan league from there because It's definetely not a strong league. Maybe if there's a contest about the most boring league then i can proudly say that our league will take the prize with ANY competition.

About the topic i think the Egyptian league is the more competitive and the most attractive.
Just look at the Egyptian NT. Most of the players are from local clubs and that's why i admire them

Maybe they simply don't care about international club cups. Brazil used to be like this until the early 1990s, Mexico still is like this and so are Japan and South Korea.

I definitely agree with your first statement. The Moroccan league is not top 3 in Africa. I'd put it in the second tier with the rest. Even the Tunisian, Egyptian and South African leagues are not 'top' leagues. African leagues are the same for the most part. Most of them have 3-4 good teams and the rest of the teams are very weak:

Egypt - Ahly, Zamalek, Ismaily, ENNPI
Tunisia - Esperence, Etoile Du Sahel, CS Sfaxien, Club Africain
Morocco - RAJA, Wydad, FAR Rabat,
Algeria - USM Alger, JS Kabylie, MC Alger

You cant really rate the leagues. You can rate the top teams in those leagues and based on that I would say:

Level 1 - Egypt, Tunisia
Level 2 - Morocco, Algeria, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast
Level 3 - Cameroon, Sudan, Senegal, Mali, Angola, etc.

That may be the casethat the best teams are Egypt and Morocco, but all I know is some leagues like the Gambian League needs a reform. When I went . I saw three National league games and they are always interrupted by x-rated fouls; but they seem to be encouraged though. Peace and love people need.
