South Africa stepped in last minute to host the tournament after originally going to be played in Libya.

Two groups of four, top two of each group then go into straight knockout from semi-finals. The four teams that reach the knockout stage qualify for the U20 World Cup.

Qualified teams: Group A: Egypt, Lesotho, South Africa, Mali
Group B: Ghana, Cameroon, Gambia, Nigeria.

Kicks off this Sunday with the hosts playing Mali followed by Egypt. Then an early big game on Monday Ghana playing Nigeria.

Always some good players on show and of course the current World Champions at this level are from the African continent.

The Cameroon game was the first to be available on stream so maybe a chance to actually see further matches rather than just reading about them. Terrible playing conditions in S.Africa for the players.

Mali 1 Egypt 0

Goalscorer: Konate Amara 75'

Mali qualified for both the semi-finals of this competition plus booked their place in Colombia for the World Cup with this win.

The referee tried his best to spoil the game with a poor decision to send off Kalifa Coulibaly within 10 minutes and reduce Mali. Mali responded well though with ten men and Egypt although they created a couple of chances didn't do enough to win the match.

The game was won with a quality freekick from Konate Amara. He is a good player and one to note. Plays leftback and has a bit of class about him. Also captains the side. Playing his football in his native country for AS Bamako.

Don't know what all the fuss was about Omar Gaber for Egypt pre tournament. He is meant to be a versatile player, can play different positions but his midfield role in this one was nondescript. Got subbed off. Mohamed Salah has been much more impressive, made some good runs in this game but was wayward with a few shooting chances he had. One plays for Zamalek while the other plays for Arab Contractors. Probably the reason for the hype for one player over another.

Nigeria have made an official complaint over the state of the pitch in this tourney. All but two of the matches are scheduled to be played in the one stadium. Today's conditions were not so bad, no rain but still poor enough. Other teams have also complained and are putting pressure on the organisers to change venue.

Nigeria 0 Cameroon 1

Goalscorer: Franck Ohandza 45'

Deserved win for Cameroon. Nigeria were poor in this match and Cameroon dealt with them comfortably defensively while also having a better team style and pattern of play.

Good goal from Ohandza. Sharp turn and a very good strong finish. He also looked lively with a couple of other chances and was unlucky not to add to the one goal. Playing his club football in Thailand atm.

Cameroon qualify to the semi finals and the World Cup.

Gambia 1 Ghana 1

Goalscorers: Gambia: Jammeh Baboucarr 22', Ghana: Boakye Richmond 88'

Ghana are in serious trouble in the group after this draw. It is out of their hands whether they will qualify. They can beat Cameroon in the last game, the Cameroon coach has already said he will rest players now that they have qualified but a Nigeria win over Gambia knocks them out whatever they do in their last match.

Gambia deserved this draw. Ghana may have hit the woodwork twice late on but Gambia defended well throughout the match apart from a late lapse on the far post for the equaliser and posed a threat on the counters to a suspect Ghana defence after being reduced to ten men for much of the match. Ghana while not as poor as Nigeria in their game were still disappointing. They lacked invention in their play and this team is a far cry from the World Champions edition two years ago. Gambia won the U17 African Champs a couple of years back and this team has matured together after that success. They are worthy opponents for any side in this competition.

All the Gambian defenders played well but the standout was the CB Ebrima Camara. Very strong in the challenge and a natural leader at the back. More impressive than any Ghana player today. Plays his club football in Sweden.

Mali 0 Nigeria 2

Goalscorers: Uche Nwofor 21', Stanley Okoro 90'

Nigeria beginning to put the results together now after looking blunt against Cameroon a few matches back.

So a Cameroon - Nigeria final. Cameroon will be hoping for a similar game to the one where they beat Nigeria comfortably in the group stage but the Nigerians have seemed to get their act together since then.

Congrats to Nigeria.
