One of the arab world's greatest novelists, and arguably Saudi's finest, passed away a few weeks ago in a Syrian hospital. Abdelrahman Munif, who died at the age of 71, was one of the most respected writers of the arab world.
His hard hitting novels, re-invented the arabic novel, and courted much controversy with the region's rulers. His magnum opus, was the "cities of salt" quintet, the first three parts of which are translated into English.

List of works:

* the trees and the assasination of Marzoug , 1973
* A hindu love story, 1973
* East of the Med., 1975
* When we left the bridge, 1976
* The endings, 1977
* Long distance races, 1979
* A world without maps, 1982 (co. authored)
* Cities of Salt:
- The wandering , 1984
- The trench , 1985
- Divisions of night and day, 1989
- The sowing, 1989
- The desert of darkness, 1989
* Here now, East of the med. once more , 1999
* The blackened land (trilogy)

An excellent writer.

The Cities of Salt was an excellent introduction and a literary mirror to the evolution of the Arab world. A good variation to the other great, Mafouz who focuses more on the micro aspects of life.

Sad to see him go. :( :( :(
