Aaron Ramsey is to join Arsenal from FA Cup finalists Cardiff City in a £5m cash deal, BBC Sport understands.

Champions League winners Manchester United and Premier League giants Everton were also fighting to sign the 17-year-old Welsh wonderkid.

But Ramsey has chosen Arsenal after the Gunners flew him out to Switzerland for face-to-face talks with boss Arsene Wenger, who is at Euro 2008.

Unlike United, the Arsenal deal does not include a loan back option.

Ramsey, who has made just 22 appearance for the Championship side, is expected to have a medical at Arsenal's plush Hertfordshire training ground within the next 24 hours.

A Cardiff City statement read: "Cardiff City were informed on Friday morning that Aaron Ramsey's preferred destination this summer is the Emirates Stadium with Arsenal.

"We will now continue the dialogue with the Gunners with a view to Aaron's move being completed.

"The move, unlike other options, does not include a loan back period at Ninian Park for the 2008/09 season.

"We would like to wish Aaron every success in the top-flight."

NEW Arsenal signing Aaron Ramsey has received an surprise good luck message as he begins his Emirates career.

The £5million wonderkid became the Gunners' first summer signing earlier this month when he joined from Cardiff.

Ramsey, 17, rejected offers from Manchester United and Everton in favour of a move to North London.

But it could have been so different for the talented teenager.

Only 18 months ago, Ramsey was spotted playing rugby league for his school by scouts from St Helens.

The Super League club offered him the chance to start a professional career with them.

But Ramsey had already decided his future was in football and chose to stick with Cardiff.

It was a decision that paid off for the gifted midfielder.

Just months later he became the second-youngest player to feature in an FA Cup final when the Bluebirds lost to Portsmouth at Wembley.

An international call-up for Wales followed before the Premier League's top teams queued up for his signature.

St Helens and England rugby league star Jon Wilkin hopes Ramsey makes a success of his time at Arsenal.

The forward, 24, said: "It sounds like he's a very talented guy and I wish him all the best.

"Potentially he's going to benefit financially from choosing football over rugby league.

"But for him the main thing is that he has to be doing what he enjoys the most.

"If football is the game he likes then he has definitely made the right decision.

"Obviously it would have been great for him to come in to rugby league but that's one of the challenges we face in our sport.

"We would love to be able to attract the best players but sometimes it's hard to compete with the

He has played left wing, right wing, centre mid, left back, right back, and behind the strikers this season, a REAL versatile player! Unfortunately no youtube videos but if you go on BBC theres quite a few stories from managers singing his praises.
Thanks for that, Number7.

but what about his style of play - I am curious?

Pwoah, what a goal!
Awesome gem you've got there. Did great to steal him off our interest:(, should turn out a steal.
what a goal from ramsey. lets be honest, his first touch looked pretty poor but made up with the awesome finish. great game from him. nice pass in the 2nd goal.
Good to see him delivering and progressing
the greatest living Welshmen, much better than that **** over at the Lane that misses pens for his NT.
I havent had many opportunities before this season to see this guy, but now I have seen him a few times with Wales U21 and Arsenal in the League Cup and this kid is absolutely special. He made Huddlestone, Noble, Cattermole and co. look like 4th division players when he was on the ball :D

well let's face it, most of them should be 4th divison players, Huddlestone looks more like a Sunday League player, you can imagine him with his pint and putting his cig out on the pitch as he steps out for the second half.
Very classy stuff from Ramsey there. Very promising :lick:
Speaking of Huddlestone, I still remember I spent my precious time to watch Spurs match just because some of their fans that he is their equivalent to Cesc Fabregas and I ended up find nothing special.

Thanks for posting this, Streetz.

Lovely goal from him tonight. Just oozes confidence, much like Cesc at the same age.
i agree, he is very much like cesc, seems to always have time and has great awareness, great passer and difficult to get of the ball- but he seems to have more confidence shooting than cesc, he will be top drawer in the future.
Oh, maybe should have said it in here. I followed a thread from the English page.

Damn, wish we had gotten Ramsey.
great goal from this kid. he's getting better and better. i honestly didnt expect him to improve this much so early. very impressed with what i'm seeing from this kid.
indeed looked very comfortable when he came on played some nice passes and great composure for his goal.
damn, this kid is f*ckn awesome, arsenal are by far the best team to watch in the world, and and top of that they're mostly kids. Arsene is a genius.
