As a concerned fan of Portuguese football, I have taken it upon myself to defend our integrity and honour when it comes to the image Portuguese football clubs give out. As a result I have taken it upon myself to compile a list of shame, as I would like to call it, that illustrates the embarrassment Benfica is to all who call themselves fans of futebol. Who knows, maybe in the future we can use this list to make a case with UEFA to ban them from any Cup (Who am I kidding, I mean the UEFA cup) play.

I am calling for all fans, especially FCP and Sporting fans, to think of a blunder this once upon a time fine institution has committed. I ask you to post a descriptive account of what these IDIOTS have done. Think but not too hard because it should not be too difficult to think of ****_ ups these MORONS have done. The example can be anything, such as not paying players, players refusing to play for the team and so on. The only thing I ask, especially to the FCP fans, is not to use allegations or rumours. Unlike them we have integrity and honour. One more thing, I ask that idiots please not post anything.

Here is my contribution to the list of shame:

Benfica let Joao Pinto go

The biggest Portuguese star still playing in the domestic league has been told he can leave Benfica.

The Lisbon giants announced they had agreed to rescind his
contract - due to run until 2004 - and blamed the sudden departure of the 28-year-old international striker on the club's plans to form a listed company.

"(The move is due to) the start of a new stage for the club, with the incorporation of a sporting company for professional football," a Benfica statement said.

A downcast Pinto said he felt sad to leave the club where he had played since 1992 and said he had not been in contact with any other team.

"I have made no contacts of any sort and have not entered
any agreement," Pinto told a news conference.

Pinto, one of the stars of the Portugal team that will play
in the European Championship, did not have a happy 1999/2000
season. German trainer Jupp Heynkes left him on the bench
several times during the season, in wich his side finished
third behind champions Sporting Lisbon and runners-up Porto.

Although no explicit reason was given for cutting Pinto
loose, club sources suggested that his high salary was a bone of contention.

Capped 58 times in senior games for Portugal, Pinto is the
country's only soccer international to have played in both the 1989 and 1991 World Youth Cup winning teams.
He has also won one Portuguese league championship medal and three cup-winners' medals.

Jeez this is so much fun, Here's another one:

Benfica face long wait to clear debts

Cash-strapped Benfica will have to wait at least two years to raise extra funds through a stock market flotation, according to the English financiers advising the club.

The struggling Portuguese giants – who face being banned from European competitions if they do not meet their debts – had hoped to float as soon as possible.

But London-based venture capitalists Apax Partners see the timetable stretching out to at least 2002.

"For a company to be appropriate to be floated, they need to be established and to be profitable, otherwise they won’t get value," Apax Partners’ director of corporate finance Glen Cooper told onefootball.com.

"They (Benfica) will be floating in due course – and I don’t think two years is a premature estimate," he added.

Benfica are planning to sell a substantial stake to the English company, who are specialists in the football business and currently advising clubs in France, Spain, Brazil, Belgium and Germany.

"We have been advising Benfica for nearly two years about the football industry and financial structuring and the way forward," explained Cooper, who brought Manchester United to the stock market in 1991.

Benfica have fallen on hard times and are desperate to raise cash to rebuild the squad and pay off creditors including former manager Graeme Souness and player Michael Thomas, who are said to be owed £1 million.

Fifa are threatening to ban Benfica from European competition unless the club meet the debts.

Apax have been drafted in to raise new funds from a stock market listing. The deal would involve Apax taking a 25 per cent stake in the club, whose legendary past includes two European Cup wins in 1961 and 1962.

"Benfica at the moment are transforming themselves from an association into a limited company," Cooper continued.

"It is essential for them to do that because when clubs are run as associations the management gets changed every three years so the people working there assume they will not be around in three years and don’t take the management seriously."

The plan is for Apax to run the club alongside Benfica chairman Joao Vale Azevedo.

The stock market listing could raise up to £50 million in total and the plan is for Benfica plc to eventually float in London as well as Lisbon.

There are currently no European clubs listed on the London Stock Exchange - although a number have an indirect listing via Enic (formerly, the English National Investment Company) which owns stakes in several European clubs.

Azevedo told onefootball.com earlier this week: "We have been waiting for this for a long time, because we want to turn Benfica into one of the best clubs in the world, like it was in the past. Once the regulators of the Lisbon Stock Exchange clear the new company, we won’t have any more problems."

All fun and games until...

somebody loses an Eye.

I have one more for you to add to your list:

The Nuno Gomes transfer.

I know you said idiots don't need to reply. However, an idiot doesn't normally know he's an idiot. So, I regress.

Oh! Almost forgot why I came here?

P.S. YOU GUYS (PORTISTAS) SUCK!

Yo, Marcoa!

We're mutually ashamed of the performance.

However, Benfica was due for an embarrasing performance. It is tough, dontcha know, being the best for so long. But, I understnad where you're coming from. benfica has set the expectations of excellence. If we don't hold them to those expectations, which club can we turn to?

There is no one else.

So, let's hope that it was fluke and move on from there.

PS. Porto STILL sucks!

Set the standards for excellence? Is excellence defined as
Benfica 2 HJK Helsinki 2
Benfica 1 HJK Helsinki 2

or how about not paying transfer fees or salaries...free-transfering your most popular player (I hope he destroys you guys at the Luz), segregating players during training sessions.

Please let me know if those situations define excellence.

Thank you

Yo, Marcoa!

It's not the setbacks that have set the standards of excellence. But, the 30 domestic and two European titles. And, in case you haven't noticed, that's nearly DOUBLE of what anyone else here can claim.

However, since we're in the topic of embarrassing losses...
I'm wondering what that makes Porto, considering the late losses to that same team, you so eloquently mention in your post, which ultimately, allowed Sporting to win the championship.

But, don't bother to answer that. I think I already know the answer to that one.

Yet, I regress. There have been more than the acceptable losses with the all glorioso, lately. Certainly, a concern. On the other hand, Benfica is a lot like the forces of gravity. Success against such forces can only be temporary. Eventually, things must return to normal. That is...Benfica at the top, where it belongs. :D

And, so in closing...

Porto etc etc. ;)

Hey Pila

You definately have a problem with reading comprehension, because I specifically stated that at the end of my posting for IDIOTS to not reply.

World class my a s s! Here's another for the list of shame.

These idiots can't even present a suitable pitch!

Heynckes slams Stadium of Light pitch

Benfica manager Jupp Heynckes is worried about the state of the pitch at the club's famous Stadium of Light.

Last November he declared "Our pitch is dangerous" and now he is unhappy with the youth teams training on the surface. Heynckes wants to see the pitch used more sparingly.

He was seen wandering around the pitch shaking his head and poking at ruts in the surface on Wednesday, and spoke at length about it with club director Alvaro Braga, his assistant Martin Delgado and the groundsman.

Well if we're digging into ancient history here, let's not forget the very impotent Porto team who had thier asses handed to them 0-4 in Manchester a few years ago.

Yo, Ola!

Funny you should mention reading comprehension.

Obviously, it appears that there is more than one of us here with a little trouble with reading comprehension. But, considering your handicap, I'll try to help out, once again.

It's hard for an idiot to figure out he's idiotic. I'm a rare exception. I'm well aware of my stupidity. That puts me one step ahead of you. But the truth be told, I envy you. Ignorance is bliss. But, again, the point is, to specifically state that "idiots" shouldn't reply to your posts is simply revealing the idiocy of the author. Anybody with two brain cells would know the futility of making such a comment.

However, I don't blame you for name calling. With such weak arguments, one can understand why you'd revert to it. It's also the stereotypical way of a Portista. So, I understand and will to take it in jest.

But, the bottom line to this whole discussion is…

PORTO SUCKS!

I ask you, why are you coming to this forum and instigating ****. I have made a point of not instigating any scraps on the other forums, however you keep coming over to this forum looking for a verbal confrontation. Furthermore, let me remind you that you crossed the line of decency with your porn comment. That was a personal comment that wasn't necessary and you continue to make personal attacks. It's no secret I hate Benfica, however to make a comment about my sex life is not appropriate(period)

this is your first real attempt to reason with this guy. i think his posts were originally made in jest. i think he handled your insults rather well. when he did insult you he did it in a clever subtle way that embarrassed you and now you're attempting to bring this back to a civil discussion.

you're attempt to plead for decency is almost comical. you've been using brute foul language freely with your posts and now take offense to an obvious comment made jokingly.

what you should do is learn from this.

Gentlemen

My comments have always been directed at the club we call Benficaca. Never have I directed my comments at
Pila until he directed a poor comment about my sex life. As the moderators of this forum have said, comments directed at a club are allowed, however comments about an individual (personal attack) are not. I ask moderators of this forum again, is such bevahiour allowed?

as the moderator of the forum I don't feel that comments about someone's sex life, religion, political stance should be an issue of discussion, issues such as those a personal and remain personal. If the person in question wants to talk about his sex life then go ahead...just not here...we are here to discuss FCP and Portuguese football in general. I have already stated my point on that issue....
