Blog: Final showdown
The season ends with the Coppa Italia Final, but Steve Wilson is finding it hard to decide who is going to emerge victorious
Italy’s season ends tonight with the Coppa Italia Final between Serie A champions Inter and runners-up Roma. It is the perfect match to end what has been an enthralling season – but who wants it more?
Amazingly, it is the fourth consecutive time that the two sides have met in the Italian Cup Final – thanks mainly to the tennis-style seeded draw. Roma are the holders, but Inter won the first two encounters.
Tonight’s game is possibly the hardest to call of the entire season. Inter have just won the title, but Roma were by far the better team over the closing months of the campaign.
The match may be Roberto Mancini’s farewell to the Nerazzurri, and he won’t want to go out on a low note. On the other hand, Luciano Spalletti’s boys have nothing to show yet for their hard work this term.
The Serpenti have been hit by the news that Scudetto clinching striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is unavailable for the game, but I Lupi can counter that they are without talismanic skipper Francesco Totti.
So far, no way to split them. Inter have the measure of the Giallorossi this year, the aggregate score over their two League encounters standing at 5-2 to the Beneamata. However, the Final is being played at the Olimpico.
Predictions for this tussle would be futile. If you must have an indication of who will win then toss a coin, the result will be as insightful as any pundit’s attempt to pick a winner. Let’s just hope it is great game – and may the best team win.
