Each day before the tournament I will provide you with a few interesting facts of the World Cup. Some you might know, and some you won't ;)

Let's start

1. Fastest goal in a World Cup match was scored by Czech Republic's Vaclav Masek after only 16 seconds against Mexico in 1962

2. Latest goal was scored by David Platt of England, in their second round match in 1990 against Belgium after 119 minutes

3. Fastest hattrick was scored by Hungary's Laszlo Kiss against El Salvador in 1982, when he scored after 70, 74, and 77 minutes. He is in fact also the only substitute to have scored a hattrick.

That's all for today, I'll have more tomorrow :D

Todays facts:

4. Oldest player to have scored a goal is Roger Milla of Cameroon when he scored against Russia in 1994. He was then 42 years old and 39 days.

5. Only players to have scored in every match including the final are Jairzinho of Brazil, who did this in the 1970 World Cup and Alcide Ghiggia of Uruguay in 1950. The latter only played 4 games where as Jairzinho played 6.

6. Only players to have scored in two World Cup finals are Vava of Brazil in 1958 and 1962, Pele of Brazil in 1958 and 1970 and Paul Breitner of West Germany in 1974 and 1982.

I will add some cool facts in this thread too

Here is one:

When North Korea knocked Italy out of the 1966 World Cup in the group stages, the Italian team were nervous about the reception that would await them back home. Not without good reason. Their arrival destination was kept secret to avoid the, ahem, welcoming committee, but the truth will out. On arrival, there were more than enough fans around to pelt the bus with fruit and rotten tomatoes as they escaped! Extra information - the North Korean goalscorer, Park Doo-ik, went on to become a dentist. :D

Another fact:

Brazil's 1966 goalie was called Manga, but team-mates took the mick out of his pockmarked face by giving him the kindly nickname of Frankenstein.

In the 1934 final, Raimondo Orsi scored a late equaliser for Italy to force extra time against Czechoslovakia with a shot that swerved outrageously. Next day, he attempted to repeat the strike - with no keeper in goal – for photographers: he tried and failed 20 times! :D

Host nation Italy, who lost to Argentina on penalties in the semi-finals in 1990, should maybe have seen it coming. It was played on Maradona's club ground in Naples, it was the 17th international played there, Toto Schillaci scored after 17 minutes and Roberto Donadoni, the man who had his shoot-out kick saved, was wearing... number 17.

Nice, eh? :D

Todays facts:

7. First player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup match was USA's Bert Patenaude who achieved this in the 1930 World Cup first round match against Paraguay.

8. Only player to score 4 goals in one match and still end up on the losing side was Ernst Willimowski of Poland who scored 4 against Brazil in 1938 but his side lost 6-5. Leonidas of Brazil also scored 4 goals in the same match.

9. Alf Ramesy, manager of England's World Cup winners in 1966, ran out on the field immediately after the quarter final against Argentina to prevent the players swapping shirts. Ramesy said: "We don't swap shirts with animals"

10. First own goal in World Cup history was scored by Ramon Gonzales of Paraguay in a first round match against the USA in 1930.

11. Only player to have scored a goal plus and own-goal in the same match is Ernie Brandts of Holland in the second phase match against Italy in 1978. The Dutch won 2-1

An unlucky football fan found the price of tickets for the 1986 Mexico City games prohibitive, but only after he'd cycled from Argentina! Then, when he went to get his bike for the return trip he found someone had pinched it.

Poor dude :D

Todays facts:

12. The World Cup has only seen five players who each have appeared for two nations: Jose Altafini (then known as Mazzola) for Brazil in 1958 and Italy in 1962 ; Luis Monti, Argentina in 1930 and Italy in 1934 ; Ferenc Puskas, Hungary in 1954 and Spain in 1962 ; Jose Santamaria for Uruguay in 1954 and Spain in 1962, and Robert Prosinecki for Yugoslavia in 1990 and Croatia in 1998. Of course the rules have changed now, and no player will ever be playing for more than one country again.

13. Sweden have played Brazil seven times in World Cup history. No other countires have met more often.

14. Gabriel Batistuta is the only player to have scored hat-tricks in multiple tournaments, in 1994 and 1998 (as SZeppelin mentioned)

15. No host country has been eliminated in the first round (Maybe that will change next month)

16. Only player to have scored for two different countries is Robert Prosinecki who represented Yugoslavia in 1990 scoring against the United Arab Emirates, and Croatia in 1998 scoring against Jamaica.

17. Brothers have been part of the same World Cup squad several times. But Victor and Vyceslav Chanov are unique. They were in the 1982 Soviet Union squad, both as goalkeepers. None of them played a match though, as the great Rinat Dassajev was first choice.

Ciao
