I saw the Canada-Japan match, and it was a lot closer than I had expected. Japan was not exactly the overwhelming powerhouse. Though they successfully shut down Christine Sinclair, and displayed masterful ball possession, they did not impress offensively.

The difference between the sides was the winning goal, which was scored entirely due to an error by goalkeeper Erin McLeod; had she not ventured recklessly off her line she would have had no problem stopping the ball off the soft header by Miyama. In the result, the ball sailed into the open net.

ETA: The City of Coventry Stadium was only three-quarters full for this match, which featured the current World Cup champion (Japan) and 7th-ranked Canada. I don't know if it was any better attended for the second match of the evening, between Sweden and South Africa.

North Korea delayed their match against Colombia for 65 minutes (I think this long) because there was a South Korean flag displayed on the scoreboard

Lol pretty funny stuff.

Great game by USA. Despite they got hammered in 15 minutes with two goals, they came back and showed more maturity and experience in the second half.

I glad the French team has improved a lot in recent years though.

Only two matches left for Canada, I believe. The only way to avoid meeting the USA in the Quarterfinals is to beat Sweden on Tuesday, which is extremely unlikely given the latter's superior performance against Japan and South Africa.

Edited to add: Canada didn't beat Sweden (though Sweden appeared to be eminently beatable), but as it turned out, New Zealand beat out North Korea for the last playoff spot; as a result New Zealand – and not Canada – will play the USA in the QF on Friday. Canada will face Great Britain instead.

See the revised OP in this thread for the Quarterfinal schedule.

The winners will play for Gold and Silver at Wembley Stadium. The losers will be sent to Coventry for the Bronze match.

It warrants at least a FIFA rule change. The six-second rule is arbitrary (why six? why not eight? or eleven?), and it's almost never enforced. And when it is enforced, the punishment (an indirect free kick inside the penalty area) is vastly out of proportion to the "crime" of delaying the match for a few seconds.

The referee definitely needs a refresher course in what exactly a hand ball is. In the 26th minute she made a bizarre hand ball call against Jonelle Filigno after she deflected the ball off the front of her shoulder. In the 60th minute she ignored a blatant hand ball play by Rapinoe in her own penalty area, and then in the 79th minute when Rapinoe blasted the free kick into a clutch of Canadian players at a range of about 5 metres and it hit Diana Matheson and Marie-Eve Nault as they tried to turn away from the ball, the ref deemed it to be deliberate handling in the penalty area and the resulting penalty goal sent the match into extra time.

Canada wins the Bronze medal in a 1-0 match against France. France had most of the chances but their finishing was lacking.

Canada may have been lucky to win this match, but then, they were unlucky to lose the semifinal as well.

France really unlucky in the semi, missing a pen and this third place game. But on overall French are improving getting much more media coverage. For the National team at least. Club are doing well with Olympique Lyonnais. Hopefully PSG will splash some money to built a competitive team, aswell.
