Its good hes gone to newcastle though. Bobby Robson will give young players a chance he showed by giving Ameobi and Jenas regular spots in the first team. I think under his care Viana could do well. But still i wished he had stayed in Portugal longer.
Well said Manuel. Bobby Robson was well admired by Figo and this may have contributed to Viana's signing.

I believe that Viana may have contacted Figo for his opinion.

Roster Siutation

Here is the current list of players that are confirmed for training camp. From the looks of things, the youth movement carries on:

GK
Nelson
Tiago
Nuno Santos (Back from his loan to Amadora - will stick around this season as the 3rd keeper)

D
Cesar Prates (Nobobdy else wanted him, so he's back)
Rui Jorge
Paito (Rui Jorge's long-term placement; he's young, raw, and talented!)
Beto
Quiroga
Santamaria (Young prospect will make the jump this season; Was one of the few bright spots for the U-20 NT at the Toulon Tournament in May.)

M
Paulo Bento
Rui Bento (Might be headed to Panathinaikos, though I doubt it)
Pedro Barbosa
Custodio (First Quaresma, then Viana, now Custodio! Possible replacement for Viana)
R. Tello
Quaresma
Ricardo Fernandes (Had a great season while on loan to Gil Vicente; he's a natural left winger, too!)
Luis Filipe (Rumors have him going to Porto in a trade)
Carlos Martins (Another young stud; this kid has boat loads of talent, now he needs to prove he can stay)

F
Jardel
Niculae (he's fully recovered)
Sa Pinto (health status unknown)
JVP (No idea how long the little bastard will be suspended for)
Tonito (Great season with Santa Clara; will back up JVP)
Christiano Ronaldo (He's just turned 17 and he's already playing with the big boys!! Could he be our version of Kluivert??)
Luis Lourenco (Almost fully recovered from his knee surgery)

Transfers:

Heading Out:

GK:
Beto II (3rd stringer is going to be loan out this season to get him more PT)

D:
Phil Babb (Confirmed at Sunderland)
Andre Cruz (Reports today say he is NOT coming back)
Dimas (Won't be coming back; will probably be given a free transfer)
Helder Rosario (Will get loaned out again)
Jorge Vidigal (Has been transfer listed)

M:
Hugo Viana (13 million dollars to Newcastle United)
Diogo (Couldn't make the grade last season; most likely loaned out)
Hugo (Same as Diogo; maybe headed back home to Braga)

F:
Nalitizis (Boloni wanted to sign him permanently, but Udinese wanted way too much $$)

There are also a number of B team players that have been transfer listed including: Afonso Martins, Bruno Caires, Luis Dias, Vasco Matos

Coming In
NOTE: There have been no confirmed signings, yet. These are the rumors

GK: - Don't need any

D;
Pablo Contreras (Celta Vigo) - Was supposed to be part of the failed Viana deal. However, he may still come, but on loan. Can play center back or on the right.
Ricardo Silva (Porto) - Possibly coming in some sort of exchange for Luis Fillipe. I like this kid, alot!

M:
Danny (Maritimo) - He's another 18 yr old phenom! Could be a possible replacement for Viana
Chainho (Saragoza) - :yuck: I don't like him, but would be a decent back-up trinco. A very, very poor man's Vidigal.

F:
Mihaelcea, Pancu, Illie, et al - As usual, we are linked with a host of Romanian strikers. Illie would be a fantastic signing, especially if JVP is suspended for a long time. Don't know much about the other guys.
Brian McBride (Columbus Crew) - I saw this on only one website, so I don't really believe it.
Feher (Porto) - He was to also come in the Ricardo Silva deal, though I think he is just about all signed up with Benfica.

I don't think we have a real #1 keeper; we've got a #1A and a #1B. Boloni will probaby do what he did last year and go with whoever is hotter. As of right, I would prefer Nelson, though.

Also, don't count out Nuno Santos. He's a real good keeper and he is still young; I hope he gets some starts this season.

All I know about Mihalcea is in the Championship Manager game he was always one of those "hidden gem" buys who would score a sh*tload of goals. I have no idea if that has any bearing on reality, although CM's scouting reports are usually pretty good. They had Quaresma as a hidden gem a year or two ago and look at him now. ;)

In reality, Mihalcea is a hidden sh!t. ;) That's not an option at all for Sporting.

Ilie has lost his place in the NT and he's injury prone. Though his talent is undoubted, I dunno if he's really the man for Sporting.

The other two linked are Pancu, 24 years, from Rapid Bucharest, and Cursaru, 23 years, of FCM Bacau. I can say that both are excellent choices, both of them were top scorers this year in the league [Cursaru hitting one more than Pancu - but that's because Pancu was injured for 1-2 months], but I for one would go for Pancu. Why? Well, he's very gifted, technically speaking [not that Cursaru isn't - he scored the goal of the year in the league with a fantastic bycicle kick], he can easily score goals from every possible position [especially side chips - like the one Ilie scored in 1998 vs. Columbia], he's a very good free kick taker, and he's not that bad with the header. He also played very well in a freindly against France, he had a brilliant first half vs. Ukraine in a freindly [scored two, hit the post once, and got injured in the last minute of the first half, being substituted - it was 4-0 HT, ended 4-1] so that makes him a great player IMO. A hidden gem, really, unlike Mihalcea. :yuck:

The downside to Pancu's transfer is that as of 01.07 [that's tomorrow], his release fee will increase [according to Boloni, Sporting will have to pay $4.5 mil. as of tomorrow], so if the move won't be made today [today, his release fee should be arround $2.5 mil.], then I think Sporting will sign Cursaru.

Cursaru, on the other hand, is fairly cheap. He's only $1.5 mil. maximum.

Also, Cursaru had some of his goals as Play of The Day on CNN both last season and this season.

Hmm... what else... there's also a Romanian defender linked with Sporting. Iencsi, from Rapid Bucharest. 25 years, fairly talented, will probably need time to settle.

Regards,
David

Thanks for the scouting report, David!

From the little I had read, Pancu seemed to be the guy we would really want. However, I think that 4.5 million price tag might be out of our price range this summer since the team is looking to spend as little as possible.

Whoever it is, it is going to be imperative that we sign someone because of the little bastard's pending suspension.

Our First Signing for Next Season is...

Danny Miguel Gomes, aka Danny !!!!!

It's not official just yet, but Sporting and Maritimo have agreed on a transfer fee and all that remains is for Danny to agree to terms. This is a great signing!

He's 18 and plays on the U-19s with Viana, Quaresma, and Custodio. He is an attacking midfielder who could replace Viana and/or JVP. He's been playing with Maritimo since he was 15, though he only made his A team debut last season. He played 20 games and scored 5 goals and was one of Maritimo's top players.

It's not enough that we make our own young talent, but now we're stealing everyone elses!!!!!! ;)

Next on Deck to be signed: Pablo Contreras from Celta Vigo!

I don't know. The home kit barely changes from year to year (some minor differences) but the away and third kits are teh ones that get the major overhauls.

Cruz wants to move to Italy.........Bwahahahaha!!!

Cruz eyes Italy after Sporting walkout

Tuesday 9th July 2002

Brazil international Andre Cruz is to quit Sporting and Portugal. "The decision was taken a long time ago, I simply preferred not to reveal it ahead of time," he said. "My relationship with Sporting is definitely over."

The 33-year-old central defender, who joined Sporting from Torino two years ago, said there were two main reasons for the decision.

"The first has to do with my wish of a new challenge in a different competition with different objectives. The other one I won't reveal it because it has to do with personal matters."

Cruz, a free-kick specialist who has been influential in Sporting's two title wins in the past three seasons, will be available on a free transfer and has set his sights on Italy.

He said: "I want to go to Italy, if that's impossible. I'd be interested in playing in Spain too, and I'd also consider moving to Germany or England.

"I'm considering some offers but nothing is decided yet. One thing is for sure, I won't play for a Portuguese club other than Sporting. I loved it there and I will miss the club and the fans."

The much travelled Brazilian started his career at Ponte Preta then Flamengo in Brazil before moving to Italy and Napoli in 1994. He has also played for AC Milan and Standard Liege.

I think Cruz is smoking his own dirty underwear if he thinks he's going to get many takers in Serie A. He isn't even a good portuguese league defender. His marking and positioning are weak and if he wasn't so damned good at freekicks he'd be useless. I think he'd be better to stay put.

My cousin works for the apparel division of Reebok. I'll ask her and see if she's gotten a "sneak" preview.

I have 2 requests of our uniforms:

1) Don't mess with the green and white hoops....EVER!
2) I don't care what the 2nd and 3rd kits look like, as long as they get rid of that god-awful fluorescent green color! ;)

I think last year was his final "good" year. I think it's all down hill from here on out.

I have no problem with Sporting wanting him to take a pay cut. If he thinks he can do better, then let him go play for some low-level Serie A club.
