Serie A Week 32 - 1/4/06 (19.30 UK)
Inter - Messina

Stadio Giuseppe Meazza

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Messina Coach Giampiero Ventura begins his reign with a daunting trip to the San Siro to face an Inter side who know that any more slip-ups could see their own change of tactician.

Roberto Mancini couldn't be under greater pressure. Last weekend's 1-0 defeat at the hands of lowly Parma left the Nerazzurri five points behind Milan and cut their lead over Fiorentina to five. Ultimately Mancini's future at the club rests on the Champions League, but as shown by the reaction to last Saturday's humbling, there will be no patience left if the Beneamata suffer another embarrassment.

Last weekend's 1-1 draw with surprise strugglers Udinese proved the final act for Bortolo Mutti as Giallorossi Coach. However, the Sicilians are by no means doomed - they are a single point back from Udinese and within a win of Cagliari. Everything rests on President Pietro Franza's brave decision to roll the dice. One thing is certain - Ventura doesn't have time on his side, it would be a near miracle for the ex-Cagliari and Napoli tactician to claim a positive result here after only six days at the club.

Inter's 2-1 win at the Stadio San Filippo in Week 13 was overshadowed by racist abuse thrown at Marco Zoro by the travelling Inter fans. We can only hope there is no repeat of that sickening incident as Zoro is set to make the trip.

Mancini cannot call upon Giuseppe Favalli or Luis Figo who has a calf complaint. Marco Materazzi - who started his career at Messina - will not feature.

The visitors are without Carmine Coppola who is suspended while Filippo Cristante and Brazilian defender Rafaele are injured. Ventura will hope ex-Inter marksman Arturo Di Napoli can hit the target for the third consecutive game and is likely to pair him with Bosnian Zlatan Muslimovic.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inter: Toldo; J. Zanetti, Cordoba, Samuel, Wome; Stankovic, Veron, Cambiasso, Cesar; Adriano, Recoba

Messina: Storari; Zanchi, Rezaei, Aronica, Parisi; Sculli, Donati, D'Agostino, Bondi; Muslimovic, Di Napoli

R O T A T I O N. I hope we rest Veron, Cambiasso and Stankovic for this match.

Pizarro, CZ and Solari to take their places in midfield with either Kily or Cesar on the left wing. Adriano and Martins to remain upfront as scoring again would boost their morale even further. They're young lads so they can handle 3 matches in 6 days without much physical problems.

Hopefully Wome plays and gets hit by a flare or something. :frustrat:

Messina are too crap to cause an upset. Way too crap. Apart from Di Napoli who scored a great goal against Udinese their team lacks talent and have loads of problems.

Storari is a fine goalie as well, and we all know very well that goalies play like supermen against Inter in particular. :frustrat:

We're 5 points off Milan with 7 matches to go, we have to win as to maintain our chances of finishing second. If not then at least consolidate our UCL spot.

3-0 with Martins scoring a brace I feel. btw this match will be played at the same time as Barca-Real. :frustrat:

Inter Milan v Messina: Preview
PA

MILAN, March 31 (Serie A) - New Messina coach Giampiero Ventura faces a baptism of fire when he makes his debut on the bench of the Sicilian club with a trip to Milan to play mighty Internazionale.

Ventura was given the task of saving the team from relegation after club president Pietro Franza decided to end the tenure of Bortolo Mutti.

Mutti had had a largely successful spell with Messina as he brought up the team to Serie A and managed to stay clear of relegation in their first season, with a surprising seventh place finish for a team playing its first campaign in the elite division since the 1960s.

However, poor results this season have left Messina in the relegation zone and finally this week Mutti was shown the door.

Ventura is expected to make a tactical change against Inter where Messina will likely play with a three-men defence, rather than their normal quartet.

This is not the first time that Messina will change formation, as they have done so frequently during the season depending on the opponents.

However, at the San Siro they will be missing injured defender Filippo Cristante and suspended midfielder Carmine Coppola.

Internazionale have had a taxing week with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Villarreal in their first-leg Champions League match to set up a tense return clash in Spain.

Inter are expected to rest some players against Messina due to the importance of next Tuesday's match.

The Milan outfit will miss Luis Figo who is still out with an injury while Alvaro Recoba, who picked up a knock against Villarreal, is expected to return.

Inter have once again missed out on the Scudetto which has eluded them since 1988-89 but are still in the race for the second place finish that would gain them automatic entry to the Champions League.

They had a hiccup last week when they lost against Parma with their strikers failing to fire up front.

``Only the goals are missing for Inter. Sometimes the strikers don't score, but there are other situations in which other components of the team can gain advantages from their movements,'' said Inter coach Roberto Mancini.

At least Brazilian Adriano ended a scoring drought going back to March 11 when he netted against Villarreal in a season that has been something of a disappointment for the highly-rated South American.

``I'd missed scoring. I hadn't managed to score lately but it's over and now I want to work even harder to help the team with my goals,'' said Adriano after the Villarreal match.

Much of the focus in the match will be on Messina's defender Marco Zoro, who threatened to walk off the pitch in the match between the two teams in Sicily last November when Inter's away supporters racially abused the Ivorian.

With FIFA having since beefed up sanctions against teams whose supporters racially abuse opponents there will be plenty of scrutiny on the behaviour of the Inter ``ultras'' who congregate in the Curva Nord section of the San Siro.

MANCINI: "SOLARI EXEMPLARY PLAYER"
Friday, 31 March 2006 15:30:42
APPIANO GENTILE - Before answering questions in today's pre-Inter v Messina news conference, Roberto Mancini made a clarification on an article published in today's La Gazzetta dello Sport. He said: "It was reported that I stopped yesterday morning's training session because Santiago Solari wasn't working hard. This is entirely false and it has never happened because Solari has always been perfect in every aspect of his behaviour. And even if something like this had happened, I would have accepted an off-day on Solari's part, because he is one of those who has played less up to now and I would have understood. But absolutely nothing like this happened. These things have never happened, not even on Solari's part because, as I have already said, he has always had an exemplary attitude. I guarantee one hundred percent that nothing happened, and that the person who wrote it was not training on the pitch with us, and did not even see the training session. You have written something which is untrue. When I make a mistake I admit it, now you can admit it. This has never happened and this is the wrong way to behave with a player who has never done this kind of thing. These things really make me angry because this is not the right way to behave."

MANCINI: "REST ONLY FOR ADRIANO, VERON"
Friday, 31 March 2006 15:44:01
APPIANO GENTILE - Part one of Roberto Mancini's pre-Inter v Messina news conference:

Mancini, what Inter side we will see against Messina tomorrow?
"Tomorrow morning we will look at the physical condition of those who played against Villarreal. There will be some changes, but this is quite normal because otherwise it would be difficult to maintain good condition with matches every three days."

Could Luis Figo start the match?
"He won't start because he's not one hundred percent. We hope he can play part of the game tomorrow, it would be very important for him. For Luis it could be a good test ahead of Tuesday. We hope he's alright and has the chance to play."

Why hasn't Adriano been called up for tomorrow night?
"Adri has had a flexor muscle problem for about a week, and he was also doubtful for Wednesday evening. Tomorrow he could risk hurting himself seriously so it's better for him to recover. When you play a lot you get to the point where you feel the tiredness, it's nothing more than that. He's being rested as a precaution because he wouldn't be able to play. And it's better not to have him on the bench because the temptation of putting him on and the risk of injury are high."

Juan Sebastain Veron hasn't been called up, either. How is he?
"He's not in great shape because of the knock he took on Wednesday. So it's better for him to recover, but his condition doesn't worry me. Veron wanted to come and play with us, but like I said, it's better if he rests."

Will you rotate the goalkeepers?
"We will see tomorrow, but it's possible."

===========================

MANCINI: "SECOND SPOT IMPORTANT"
Friday, 31 March 2006 16:00:36
APPIANO GENTILE - Part two of Roberto Mancini's pre-Inter v Messina news conference:

Mancini, how important is second place in the league for you?
"We must try to win tomorrow, otherwise Milan could increase the gap. It is important that those who play give one hundred percent and try to win a difficult match against a team who are fighting to avoid relegation. Tomorrow we have to try and win to get as close as we can to Milan before we face them."

Psychologically, how difficult is it for a player to play for second place?
"A player must always give his best, even if he's playing for fourth or fifth place. He must still be motivated even if he can't reach first place. On the other hand, Juventus have had an extraordinary championship, definitely better than ours. But we still have the chance to finish second and this would be important. It would mean an improvement on last season and we would have the chance to make our best preparations for next season because we would avoid having to come back a fortnight earlier to play the Champions League qualifiers. We're motivated, and in any case you don't prepare for important Champions League and Tim Cup matches by playing badly in the league."

After the Villarreal game you told Obafemi Martins that he can play even better. In which way?
"He can play better because among Oba's many qualities are two incredible ones: rapidity and velocity. With these he can put any defender in difficulty, but the other day he was playing too close to Adriano and it was a mistake because of how the match was going. We should have taken better advantage of the spaces on the wings. I'm obviously pleased about the goal he scored, but he has to try and take full advantage of his great qualities."

Is Martins likely to play again tomorrow evening?
"Yes, I think so. Recoba will go on the bench, and even if he isn't in top shape, he will be ready to be used."

=====================

MANCINI: "NO REGRETS"
Friday, 31 March 2006 16:15:06
APPIANO GENTILE - Part three of Roberto Mancini's pre-Inter v Messina news conference:

Mancini, were you expecting Inter to be the only Italian team to win their quarter-final first-leg match?
"We're in the Champions League quarter-finals. They are all hard and tough matches. There's no easy game and the four results from the first legs are proof of this."

Some of the less-used players who play tomorrow will be very motivated to do well. Do you agree?
"Definitely. Those who play must give one hundred percent. Those who play will be those who are fresher than others who were used in the Tim Cup last week. We need everyone at the moment, we have important matches to play and there's not one that's more important than another. But all the boys have always done this."

Looking at Juventus' current form, do you have any regrets over a few wasted chances?
"We can't think about these things. If a few chances have been wasted it means we haven't done our best. But we should never think about what has happened otherwise you always live with regrets. We must look ahead because we still have the chance to make a great finish to the season."

Adriano misses Messina Saturday 1 April, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inter will not field Adriano or Juan Sebastian Veron against Messina this evening due to minor injuries, confirmed Roberto Mancini.

“Adriano has a slight muscular problem and it was a precautionary measure to leave him at home and rest, as he’s been a little tired,” said the Coach.

“It was also best not to call him at all, as when a player like this is on the bench, you are always tempted to put him on the field. Veron is also absent, but we have Luis Figo back to full fitness and will have to make changes because it isn’t possible to play so many big games back to back.”

The Nerazzurri will face a tricky trip to Spain for the Champions League quarter-final encounter with Villarreal on Tuesday, as the 2-1 result from the first leg is hardly reassuring.

“Figo won’t start the match, but we hope he can play for a little bit so that it’s a good test of his form for Tuesday. We could also rotate the goalkeepers and put Julio Cesar between the posts, but we’ll see before the game.”

Inter are torn between the Champions League and maintaining their push for second place, as the gap from rivals Milan has grown to five points.

“We want to win in order to close up as much as possible on the Rossoneri ahead of the derby on April 15. We still have the opportunity to finish second and this would be an important result, especially as it’d allow us to start our pre-season training two weeks later than a preliminary round for the Champions League would dictate.”

Inter squad: Toldo, Julio Cesar; Cordoba, Burdisso, J Zanetti, Mihajlovic, Materazzi, Wome; Stankovic, C Zanetti, Figo, Pizarro, Kily Gonzalez, Cambiasso, Solari, Cesar; Cruz, Recoba, Martins
