Your Family History

Post about your genealogy in this thread, thought it would be interesting.

I know quite a bit about my ancestry on my father's side, late 17th century they migrated here from Bremen, Germany, reading certain documents I know one man Johann who moved from Adelaide to Bendigo during the Gold Rush at the time, he worked as a cabinet maker and a miner amongst other things. He moved here with his wife, Rebecca, having got married back in Bremen.

Don't know so much on my mother's side, she has Irish ancestry.

You mean 18th century?

Mine is pretty boring, fake Danes since the beginning, though one fought and got his ass kicked by Bismarck in the Second Schleswig War 1864.

I've watched a Danish series on this (bar from the last episode :().

Was quite good, but had some weird old pedo doing magic shit.

Really? :D

I had a hard time understanding the international (and domestic) hype about The Killing and Borgen, but that 1864 really is in a whole new league when it comes to sucking balls, imo. Maybe it's a reverse language barrier of sorts. Though critics in Denmark didn't like 1864 very much, unlike the other two.

Bornedal the director, was given the largest Danish Tv-budget in history, fired the script writer and finished it himself rather poorly, his daughter playing the heroin who almost revolutionizes the medical sciences as a nurse in the field hospital .. :D

Perhaps, but in my case it could be more about the setting. My fav era of history is probably when wars were fought in huge line battles with muskets.

And I wanted to get the context before the final massive battles.

It wasn't anything special, even I could tell, but there was many little things in the show that got me hooked. Things thay made me forgive the cheesy parts. For example I liked the interaction between the gypsy whore and the old blind man, plus Danish language is intriguing. The story was a bit predictable, but the dialogues were good.

I like pre-1918 historical dramas too, or perhaps rather the idea of them, because they're usually not that good.

Barry Lyndon being one exception.

My family were slave holders in the US before moving back here

My family on my mom's side, from my grandparents to great great grandparents, ran a few farms in Sao Miguel. My grandpa and grandma moved to Canada with their 10 children in the late 60s. My family from my dad's side, I know less about. My grandfather was a carpenter in Sao Miguel and his father was a priest, pretty much all I know. My grandpa and grandma from that side moved to Canada with their 7 kids in the early 70s.

All four of my grandparents have passed on. I kind of wish I had sat with them and documented my family history as far back as possible. Would've been neat to do.

Boyo September 10th, 2015 22:44

My grandfather was Prince M'Boyo, the ruler of the Federal Republic of Upper Volta. Before he passed away last year, he entrusted me with his entire fortune.

Due to recent changes in the fiscal policies of Upper Volta I am looking for people with a keen business sense for a once in a lifetime opportunity.

All you have to do is provide me with your bank account number and I will make sure that the entire inheritance of 800 billion dollars will be transferred to your account. You will have to keep the funds for at least one week so that it won't count as capital while the audit takes place.

The interest that the money makes during that week is yours to keep.

Please provide me with all the data that I need and the money will be transferred to your account promptly.

I'm of Don Cossack heritage on my mom's side and was born in Novocherkassk, the Cossack HQ :proud:. Her grandfather was a landowner who's lands were confiscated by the Bolsheviks and he was sent to Siberia, the family never heard from him again.

yeniceri September 11th, 2015 14:26

My great, great, great, grandfather helped raid and pillage a Russian peasant village.

He reyped Dmitry's great, great, great, grandmother and her sisters. :m

We're all fully Lebs, thru and thru (unfortunately :yuck: )

One cool thing, is my maternal Grandfather was a General in the Army. He held the highest authority that he could within the confessional Lebanese system (i.e. at that time only Christian Maronites could earn the top military ranks) - so he, being a Muslim (Shi'a too, back then a fourth class citizen) was big achievement in reaching such a high rank.

His house, now inherited by his Turkish second wife, (first one died in the 1960s) is full of military medals, uniform, rifles, hand pistols, plaques and ceremonial swords. My dream is to inherit them and take care of them for memory's sake. His grandchildren are all scattered across the globe and couldn't give a rat's ass, including the first child of the eldest son named after grandpa...

Paternal grandfather was an investment banker. Rumors say he had many other wives, and was a freemason :howler: ...no idea how true that is. I'm only aware of him when he was 80-something, and he was a devout religious person having done Hajj 3 times.

My ancestors from my dad's side apparently hail from Basrah in Iraq. Other than that i have no f*cking clue about my ancestry.

yeniceri September 11th, 2015 16:25

My father was a farmer, his father was a farmer, his father was a farmer, his father was a farmer.

My mother's father was a farmer, his father a farmer and his father a farmer.

Part time both sides of my family would fight the Russians in the mountains. Probably killed a few of Dmitry's relatives as well.

So where did things go wrong for you ? :)

Through the paternal line, there have been a lot of farmers documented back till 1600`s .

Dont know much about the maternal line but they my maternal grandmother was from a wealthy farm and some point a lot of doctors were introduced from that end. Got their land and possessions taken away by the commies though.
