Getting back into shape

Hey all,

I played for some youth soccer clubs from age 4 up to a about age 16, and I'm 18 now, going to college in a few months and I was wondering if anyone had any tips for getting back into shape so that I could try out for my college team (its Div III, so its more than possible to walk on). I'm not too worried about my technical skills, I have been practicing those regularly, but ever since I stopped with track and field I have been a bit out of shape...put on a few pounds as well. I have about a month and a half (but don't worry, I think I can get myself fit in that time) and I was just wondering what you guys would recommend for me getting back in shape? Thanks for the help.

Get a dog

Seriously though, since I got mine, which likes nothing more than going down the park, and playing with a football, I've got into much better shape...I suppose not really an option at college though.

I dunno, you have too find something you enjoy doing, I presonally hate going too the gym, I find sitting there doing weights and running on a treadmill so boring.

At 18 you shouldnt have any problems getting into shape with a little bit of exercise - can you not join a team for pre-season training?

The question is, how the hell you let youself get out of shape at 18???

A few things I do...

1. If you can walk there, walk.

2. When you're walking around casually at home, try keeping your heels from touching the ground. Forcing your muscles to do more of the work instead of the bones and it pretty quickly tones your calfs.

3. Breathing exercizes I do quite a bit and are easy/quick and have good results. Basically you rotate your arms in a fashion while you breath and each time you tense your muscles a little more (all your upper body muscles). Hard to explain in writing. But essentially I put my hands into fists, center them in front of my sternum , push down while resisting myself and breathing out in a slow manner. Then split the fists apart and up so they are square to my shoulders (plane/wings), breathing in while again doing this slowly. Then reconnect the fists by moving them up until they are above your head, breathing out. And back to the starting position breathing in.

So you end up where you started and can go again, remember each breath you tense up more and resist yourself more but keep breathing and moving slowly. If you do it right you'll reach your limits in a few minutes and your arms feel lighter, but it also works your abs and back muscles.

4. Horseback stance, standing like your sitting on a huge ****ing horse. So legs to the side and bending down. Just stand like this watching TV or something, can put your arms out too (add weights if you have them). Just do it for 5 minutes or whatever you can do.

5. Lie on your back on the floor, legs together and hands under your arse. Then put your feet 6 inches off the ground for a start, leave them there for a minute or so, then raise your legs a couple of feet off the ground for a minute and back to 6 inches again. Keep doing this until you reach your limits, have a rest and start again if you want.

Just some things to try, if there is somewhere specific you are looking to shed pounds or add muscle then fill us in.

I can just see it now, the family all sat around watching the TV on a sunday afternoon, and I stroll in and get into the horseback stance

No 5 I do use myself, I do it outwards as well as up and down.

Running, Running and then a bit more Running, that's the best way to get yourself fit.
Cut back on the rubbish you eat, and drink and your sorted.

Loads of exercise, burning up more calories than you take in will get rid of any overweight you've put on in the last year or two as well.

Haha, very easily, at this age you start smoking more often, drinking more often, skipping meals etc.

Had my first friendly last night and I wasnt as bad as I thought seeing as I havent kicked a ball or done any sort of exercise since the season ended - still a long way off from being fit though!

I hate running on my own. I find it so boring... But i like running with a mate. Its the camaraderie i think. Ive been injured for about a 1year now. So ive just been putting on weight but im havin surgery in october. And after that hopefully ill be able to start exercising again.

Run, run, run. You should find it easy as. It's when you're getting into your late twenties that things get tough!
