2012 Summer Olympics Women's Football Tournament (qualifiying)

With the 2012 Olympics around the corner, I thought we should discuss the qualifiying phase as we have nothing else to talk about.

UEFA

UEFA has their qualfying done at the World Cup. For UEFA, the top two European teams at the World Cup qualify for the Olympics. In this case, those two were France and Sweden. There's controversy over this because now, Germany (Europe's biggest power) won't be qualifying.

AFC

AFC has three rounds in total for their Olympic qualifying system. The first two were done before and during the World Cup. The final round will consist of Australia, China PR, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, and finally Thailand all making one group. The top two teams from this group will qualify.

CAF

Just like AFC, CAF qualifying for 2012 had rounds done before (but not during) the Women's World Cup. This left that specific zone with one last round of qualifying, the which is made up of two two-legged matchups. They are Nigeria-Cameroon aand South Africa-Ethiopia.

CONCACAF

CONCACAF had a Pre-Olympic Tournament qualification before the final round. Teams that made it were Canada, USA, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Mexico.

CONMEBOL

In the CONMEBOL zone, 2010 had a Sudoamericao Femino which determined who qualifies for the upcoming 2012 Olympics. The two teams were Brazil and also Colombia.

OFC

In OFC, there will also be a qualifying tournament held in 2012. New Zealand will most likely take the one spot but it still isn't for sure.

Thanks for starting this thread, Sac.

The finals of the CONCACAF women's qualifying for the 2012 Olympics will be held in Vancouver, Canada, January 19-29, 2012. Two teams from CONCACAF will go to London next year.

In addition to the six teams you mention above, there will be two from the Central American division to round out the 8-team tournament.

No problem. I thought we needed some conversation since the WWC was finished and nothing else is going on. In my opinion, USA and Canada will make the Olympics, with USA dominating and Canada just edging Mexico for the final spot.

Much depends on how the tournament is organized. If Canada meets the USA in a semifinal match, then it's bye-bye to Canada's Olympic hopes.

UPDATE:

Here's the schedule:
Times are Eastern Standard; Pacific (local) times in parentheses

FIRST ROUND

Thursday, January 19
Group A:
Costa Rica v. Cuba, 8 p.m. (5 p.m.)
Canada v. Haiti, 7:30 p.m. (10:30 p.m.)

Friday, January 20
Group B:
Mexico v. Guatemala, 8 p.m. (5 p.m.)
Dominican Republic v. United States, 10:30 p.m. (7:30 p.m.)

Saturday, January 21
Group A:
Haiti v. Costa Rica, 8 p.m. (5 p.m.)
Canada v. Cuba, 7:30 p.m. (10:30 p.m.)

Sunday, January 22
Group B:
Mexico v. Dominican Republic, 5 p.m. (2 p.m.)
United States v. Guatemala, 7:30 p.m. (4:30 p.m.)

Monday, January 23
GROUP A:
Cuba v. Haiti, 8 p.m. (5 p.m.)
Canada v. Costa Rica, 10:30 p.m. (7:30 p.m.)

Tuesday, January 24
GROUP B:
Guatemala vs. Dominican Republic, 8 p.m. (5 p.m.)
United States vs. Mexico, 10:30 p.m. (7:30 p.m.)

SEMIFINALS

Friday, January 27
Group B winner vs. Group A runner-up, 8 p.m. (5 p.m.)
Group A winner vs. Group B runner-up, 11 p.m. (8 p.m.)

FINAL

Sunday, January 29, 8 p.m. (5 p.m.)

The Final is kind of pointless because both teams will be going to the Olympics regardless of the outcome.

On August 26th, this month, the CAF zone will have their first leg of the play-offs happen. Just wanted to mention this because they won't have the second leg until November. I never understood why all FIFA competitions had so much space in between qualifying phases.

It's looking as if the CONCACAF semifinals on Friday January 27 will be
USA v. Costa Rica
Canada v. Mexico
The winners of those matches will qualify for the London Olympics.

The OFC tournament is scheduled for March 1-7. Details HERE
But if New Zealand doesn't win, I'll eat my shorts.

Update March 5: The final will be two legs, between New Zealand and either PNG or Tonga, on March 31 and April 4.

Update April 7: It's New Zealand, natch. They beat PNG 15-0 on aggregate over two legs.

It's Canada!

Christine Sinclair now has 129 international goals, tying her with Abby Wambach for third place all-time.

Exactly Jeff, what a fantastic tournament it's been for our girl's

Beating Mexico last night sent them through to the summer game's, but a win against the American's will be a bonus in the Final.
