"Overbeck Retires From National Team

"Carla Overbeck's final game with the United States national team was less satisfying than she had hoped it would be.

"Overbeck, the longtime captain of the decorated women's soccer team, missed two shots in injury time, amd the Olympioc silver medalists played to a 1-1 tie yesterday with Japan in the final game of their 2000 season.

"'I was angry that I didn't get that last one to go, but you've got to accept that sometimes, I guess,' said Overbeck, who will continue to play for North Carolina [Temptest] of the Women's United Soccer Associatio [WUSA].

Brandi Chastain had the United States goal, and Homare Sawa scored for Japan."

______

The first 2001 friendly match for the U.S. national team will be against China in January. And, as for Overbeck, good luck to a brand new season with WUSA !!!

Btw it may also be a most encouraging sign that players from other countries are finally catching up, and maybe surpassing the U.S. women.
