The Pepsi Female Super League tournament kicked off today in the National Stadium in Lagos, Nigeria. This event involves the top six Pepsi Female League club sides (the best two teams from each of the three zones) competing in a round robin tournament to determine the League Champion.
This event started in 1998 in Calabar, a coastal town in the extreme south east of Nigeria, and the Pelican Stars of Calabar have won it back-to-back. The female league started in 1993, and the team with the most points became the champions, before the arrival of this tournament.
The Super League System was introduced to give the top teams the opportunity of playing on neutral ground. It also gives fans the chance of seeing the best teams in the league.
