Congratulations to Ørn on their very impressive victory over Brøndby on the Danish club's home field. As a reward for this great win, Trondheim now apparently will have one of the least challenging paths to the UEFA Cup semis.

This victory must have been especially sweet for Ørn's National Team players Ingrid Hjelmseth, Gunhild Følstad, Elisabeth Fagereng, Heidi Pedersen, Ann Iren Mørkved, Unni Lehn & Ragnhild Gulbrandsen who were all on the squad that traveled to Odense in late May and suffered that disappointing 2-1 loss to Denmark in an important European Championship qualifying match. It is interesting to note too that Peer Danefeld, the coach of Brøndby, had been coach of Kolbotn in Norway the previous several seasons and was no stranger to Trondheims squad.

HEIA ØRN!!

Congrats also to the Russian Energy Voronezh team, who stepped up to the plate and earned draws with both Ørn and Brøndby, proving they belong in the top ranks of the European clubs.

The big disappointment was Montpellier, which failed to uphold the French reputation established in recent years by Toulouse.

I'm happy to see that Trondheims/Ørn finally got a Norwegian team to the semifinal in the European cup after some failed Norwegian quarterfinals in the past. Well done.

In the Norwegian league they only came in second behind Røa. Røa who won their first championship, today completed the double, by winning their first Norwegian cup (first final as well). Amazing season for Røa. It will be interesting if they can keep it up next season, in Norway as well as in the European cup.

Thanks, Anders!

Yes, it was Asker 1, Røa 2 in the cup final.

Let's see how Røa does next year in Europe!

Yes it was an amazing season for Røa. Does anyone know if Silje Vesterbekkmo was in goal for all of Røa's matches? I thought it was phenomenal when Bente Nordby only gave up 9 goals in 18 matches during the 2002 Championship season for Kolbotn, but I believe that this season Røa also only gave up 9 goals total.

Interesting to note that Silje was the goalkeeper at Kolbotn when Bente Nordby joined the club after spending a disappointing 2001 season in the U.S. playing for Carolina and San Diego in the now defunct WUSA. Silje also ended up being Bente's backup goalkeeper at the 2003 World Cup after one of Dagny Mellgren's shots broke Ingrid Hjelmseth's hand as I recall.

One question too for Jeff. Has been announced yet when Trondheims/Ørn will play their semifinal matches? I went to the UEFA.com site and couldn't find any information about this.

According to Trondheim's website, the semi-final matches are set for April 10 and 17 for both semifinal series.

UEFA.com will be the last place to report the schedule.

Final, first leg result, May 15:

Djurgården/Älvsjö 0-2 Turbine Potsdam
Goals: Conny Pohlers (34), Anja Mittag (53)

That's two away goals for Potsdam, who seem sure to win the Cup at home on May 21.

Turbine Potsdam are heavy favourites to win the Cup on Saturday, going into the second leg on home field with a 2-0 advantage.

This team has been nothing but overpowering throughout the tournament. Scoring 29 goals in 7 matches, they beat the French, Polish, and Italian champions in group play, then eliminated the Russian champs 5-2 on a 2-game aggregate, and humiliated the Norwegian Trondheims/Ørn side 7-1 on aggregate to get into the finals.

Several Turbine players are stars on the German national team: Ariane Hingst, Anja Mittag, Jennifer Zietz, Viola Odebrecht, Petra Wimbersky, Conny Pohlers and goalkeeper Nadine Angerer.

Perhaps surprisingly, Potsdam has failed to defend their Frauen-Bundesliga title this year, finishing the season in a distant third place. FFC Frankfurt finished in first place.
