Honours for Canadian team
The Canadian women's soccer team came in a close second in annual year-end balloting for Canadian Team of the Year (all sports).
The voters are sports editors and broadcasters across Canada (mostly male, and mostly ignorant about soccer).
The winning team was the (surprise!) men's hockey team that won the World Hockey Championship by defeating Sweden 3-2 on May 11, 2003. They got 93 points in the preferential-ballot voting.
The women's soccer team, which reached the final 4 of the World Cup, got 85 points.
The women actually got more first-place votes (18 to 16) but the men got more second- and third-place votes.
