USA v. Italy friendly, Oct.22
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Moira Placchi scored in the 63rd minute to lift Italy to a 2-2 tie in an exhibition Wednesday night with the United States women's soccer team.
Placchi's goal, her second career score for Italy, came from about five yards away past goalkeeper Siri Mullinix, after Italy's Ilaria Pasqui headed a free kick toward Placchi.
Pasqui scored in the first minute to give Italy a 1-0 lead. She ran past defender Kate Sobrero, controlled a pass from Patrizia Panico and shot past Mullinix. The goal came 11 seconds into the match.
The United States tied it in the 36th on an own goal by Italy defender Manuela Tesse, who kicked the ball into her net while it was in the air after American forward Abby Wambach played it off of her chest.
Shannon MacMillan scored in the 60th directly from a free kick to put the United States ahead 2-1.
Mia Hamm sat out, resting due to injuries suffered at the World Cup, as did Cat Reddick, who returned to classes at North Carolina.
Italy started five players from the team that started in its 2003 European Women's Championship qualifier on Sept. 27 against Switzerland. Italy won that match 1-0.
Wow. Italy scored 11 seconds into the match!
