Canada has been losing defenders left and right.

The lack of healthy defenders has led to the ridiculous situation where strikers and midfielders are put into service on the defence, where they are not accustomed to playing. Against a team like the USA, it's a recipe for disaster.

First there was Candace Chapman, who suffered a knee injury before the World Cup in a practice game.

Then there was Breanna Boyd who suffered a concussion while playing for the Carolina Courage of the WUSA, and still has not recovered.

Then there was Randee Hermus who is nursing a leg injury.

Isabelle Morneau injured her knee in the match against China, and is out.

Striker Silvana Burtini, who had hardly played at all in the year prior to the World Cup, was called back into the roster before the tournament began so she could help out on defence. She injured her knee in the match against Sweden, so she's out.

Now it's reported that Tanya Dennis, who was brought in as a rookie shortly before the World Cup to fill in for the injured veterans, has a concussion, and will not be able to play in the Third Place match.

And so now Sasha Andrews, the young defender who played on the U-19 team that won the silver medal last year in the FIFA World Championship, has been pressed into service with the senior Canadian squad for the USA game.

With her on the back row will be the recently-recovered defender Sharolta Nonen, who has played so well in this tournament, Charmaine Hooper, who belongs at the other end of the field, and Brittany Timko, who's much better in her accustomed role as a midfielder.

So don't be surprised to see the USA get a lopsided win on Saturday.

6 of our 9 poll respondents picked the USA to win this match.

And they were right.

USA dominated the midfield, and that was the key to their success. Canada has to do something about this weakness in midfield if they are going to progress to the top ranks of soccer.

It was an entertaining match, and my fave player Sinclair scored a goal! The best player for Canada, however, was Charmaine Hooper on defence.
