World Cup - The Draw

The draw for the 4 Groups will be made July 17. Here's the procedure:

1. USA (as host) is in Group A, position 1 (let's call it A1).

2. A draw will be made among China, Norway and Germany. One will be B1, the next will be C1, and the other will be D1.

3. A draw will be made among Ghana, Nigeria, Argentina and Brazil. The first drawn will go into Group A, the second into Group B, and so on. Each team's position in the Group will be determined by a secondary random draw. (For example, if Ghana is drawn into Group A, a secondary draw will be made to determine whether it will be A2, A3, or A4.)

4. A draw will be made among France, Russia and Sweden (all UEFA teams). The first drawn will go into Group A, with a secondary draw to determine its position in the Group. The second drawn will go into China's group. If China is in Group B, the remaining team in this draw will go into Group C. If China is in Group C or D, the third team in this draw will go into Group B. The result will be that each group will have one UEFA team, except for one group that will have two UEFA teams. The latter group will be headed by either Norway or Germany.

5. A draw will be made among the remaining 5 teams: Canada, Japan, North Korea, South Korea and Australia. The first drawn will go into the group that only has two teams (either Norway's or Germany's). The remaining four will be drawn into Groups A, B, C, and D in order, except that Canada cannot go into Group A, and no two Asian teams can go into the same group.

The draw will be carried live on an American cable station, ESPNews, at 2:00 p.m. EDT.

It will also be tracked at ussoccer.com's website (click the box at the right of the screen).

My assessment of the draw:

Group A:

Strongest of all the groups, based solely on FIFA ranking (3 teams in the top 7). USA is favoured to advance, but second place is up for grabs. Nigeria could be the surprise team of this tournament.

Group B:

Another tough group, with 3 teams in the top 9 of the rankings. Don't expect Norway to lose or draw any of its three games. Again the second place is up for grabs, but I give the edge to France as the team who will advance to meet USA (gulp!) in the QF's.

Group C:

Not a bad draw for Canada (could have been a lot worse), who should advance as second-place team, to play China in the QF's. Germany will humiliate all the rest.

Group D:

The weakest group of the bunch, and another lucky break for China (first they get automatic qualification, and now this), who I think is over-rated. They should win this group handily, with Australia a close second. Don't expect much from the over-rated Russia.

Not if you both win your groups, or if you both finish second in your groups Lili.

No South Korea is number 25 on the list, it is North Korea that is above you on the list.

Brazil will be playing without Sissi and without Pretinha, who tore her ACL last weekend. This makes them considerably less formidable on offence. I think France has the edge over Brazil in Group B.

Brazil is playing two games in Canada this week - tonight and Sunday. The results will be interesting in terms of assessing both teams.

Stay tuned.

Brazil lost 2-1 to Canada on Thursday.

Second time in less than a week that Brazil has given up a game-winning goal in the final minutes.
