CAN 2013: QF2 South Africa 1-1 Mali (1-3 after pen.)

The hosts are facing Mali at 19:30 CET in Durban and they are favourites to reach the semi finals. They started slowly in the group stage but grew throughout it. Mali was unimpressive in all their matches so far. Line-ups coming up soon.

Mali play such a boring style...last year though they eliminated one of the hosts (Gabon) in the quarterfinals

South Africa have the lead but the goal was scored while two players were down due to head injury...not sure what really the rule is, South Africa was attacking full speed but usually refs stop right away for head injuries

just like last year Mali are going to extra time in the quarters. Mali played better in the second half and the Keita goal took some steam out of South Africa

I've just seen the replay of that goal (didn't watch the match) and I'm glad the ref didn't stop it. The two players down were one from each side which means none of the two teams was taking advantage of having one man down and breaking a fast attack like that would have been really odd.

I don't think any of these two sides would have any chances against Ivory Coast but you never know.

If my memory serves me correctly, that Diakite fellow was decisive in Stad Malien winning the CAF Confederation Cup a few years ago (don't recall which year exactly), on a penalty shootout in the final against an Algerian team (Setif)

Must be a specialist. Kinda like Essam El-Hadary being decisive for club and country in shootouts.

If I'm not wrong I believe Pienaar withdrew from international football. Shabalala was on the bench and came in during the second half.

I don't think SA was that bad in this tournament. I was expecting much worse. Players like Sangweni, Furman or Mahlangu had a good tournament.

I've watched the penalty shoot out now and if there was anything insane about it was how bad SA took 3 out of their 4 penalties. The Malian keeper could just as well not having showed up and they would still probably go through.
