2013 African Cup of Nations qualifiers

Games today - return legs in June one stage of qualifying after this. Direct knock-out format too for the right to play in South Africa next January.

1130 Madagascar v Cape Verde
1300 Ethiopia v Benin
1300 Tanzania v Mozambique
1330 Burundi v Zimbabwe
1330 Rwanda v Nigeria
1330 Seychelles v DR Congo
1400 Kenya v Togo
1400 Chad v Malawi
1430 Congo Brazzaville v Uganda
1500 Sao Tome v Sierra Leone
1600 Liberia v Namibia
1630 The Gambia v Algeria
1500 Guinea Bissau v Cameroon

Right now: Madagascar 0 Cape Verde 4

Cape Verde with a lot of Portuguese based players but some Dutch based players too. Sparta's Toni Varela among the goals

Zimbabwe currently 2 up against Burundi

but most interesting will be to see how Cameroon and Nigeria fare after their humiliations in the previous qualifying round

Lex Immers - Pace & power. Holland's #1 box to box player

Feyenoord forum - the place to talk about this phenomenon

Nigeria scoreless away to Rwanda, not a result which inspires confidence but I suspect they should handle the business at home

Madagascar - Cape Verde 0:4
Tanzania - Mozambique 1:1
Rwanda - Nigeria 0:0
Ethiopia - Benin 0:0
Burundi - Zimbabwe 2:1
Kenya - Togo 2:1
Chad - Malawi 3:2
Seychelles - DR Congo 0:4
Congo - Uganda 3:1
Liberia - Namibia 1:0
Gambia - Algeria 1:2
Guinea-Bissau - Cameroon 0:1
Sao Tome - Sierra Leone 2:1
Egypt - Central African Republic (June 15)

There was some confusion over the Burundi - Zimbabwe score. BBC has it as a 2:1 Burundi victory while livescore has it a 0:2 win for Zimbabwe. I trust BBC more

Cameroon and Algeria scrape by with wins and should advance to the next round. The biggest surprise was Sao Tome and Principe winning, this is a nation which didn't even enter a team in the past few years

We're going to exit from the ACN qualifiers again?

From totally owning the tournament thrice to not even making it twice, lolz.

Not too fussed tbh, didn't even watch those 2 games. Hopefully we learn from our mistakes and focus on the WCQ.

the final qualifying round draw was completed a few days ago with the winners of these two-leg playoffs joining South Africa for the 2013 African Cup of Nations. Senegal got an unfortunate draw as they will play Ivory Coast in the tie of the round. The first leg will be played on the weekend of September 7-9 and the return leg on the weekend of October 12-14

Mali vs. Botswana
Zimbabwe vs. Angola
Ghana vs. Malawi
Liberia vs. Nigeria
Zambia vs. Uganda
Cape Verde vs. Cameroon
Mozambique vs. Morocco
Sierra Leone vs. Tunisia
Guinea vs. Niger
Sudan vs. Ethiopia
Libya vs. Algeria
Ivory Coast vs. Senegal
Congo DR vs. Equatorial Guinea
Gabon vs. Togo
Burkina Faso vs. Central African Republic

Most of the first leg matches were played today with 5 matches being played tomorrow. For some reason the return legs are a month later

Mali - Botswana 3:0
Ghana - Malawi 2:0
Zambia - Uganda 1:0
Cape Verde - Cameroon 2:0
Sierra Leone - Tunisia 2:2
Sudan - Ethiopia 5:3
Ivory Coast - Senegal 4:2
Gabon - Togo 1:1
Central African Republic - Burkina Faso 1:0
Liberia - Nigeria 2:2

Ivory Coast defeat Senegal in the tie of the playoff, Senegal just has too many defensive problems to even become a legit threat in Africa yet alone a World Cup, fantastic attack but need better organization. The surprise result of the round is Cameroon, who like Egypt, might miss their second ACN in a row. Togo getting a draw in Gabon is a smaller surprise with Adebayor returning to the Togo NT

Tomorrow...
Zimbabwe vs. Angola
Mozambique vs. Morocco
Guinea vs. Niger
Libya vs. Algeria
Congo DR vs. Equatorial Guinea

Zimbabwe - Angola 3:1
Mozambique - Morocco 2:0
Congo DR - Eq. Guinea 4:0
Libya - Algeria 0:1
Guinea - Niger 1:0

Return legs are on October 12-14

Mozambique was robbed in the second leg in Morocco. It's true that their ultra-defensive tactics invited Morocco to go on top of them but it was a very dubious penalty+red card that turned the tie in favour of the hosts. Morocco did 2-0 through that penlaty at 62' and then pressed for the 3rd that came 6 minutes from time.

Cape Verde have produced some good players. Many of whom end up playing for other nations though. Gelson and Manuel Fernandes were both born in Cape Verde but ended up playing for Switzerland and Portugal respectively. They've improved a lot over recent years, not entirely sure why. But I could find out a bit more. I know they have a lot of players playing in Portugal.

yes they seem to have a bunch of players in Portuguese league although hardly any of them is getting regular playing time. Still shocking that they manage to beat Cameroon which has many top level players.

BTW does anybody know if this match will be streamed somewhere? couldn't find any mention of it in regular places. I guess not many international channels if any will bother with ACN qualification matches and it's probably too much to expect anybody to stream Cameroonian terrestrial TV.

Their football has been improving in recent years and they do have plenty of players in our league but also in Holland where the second largest community of Cape Verdians live in Europe.

According to Rojadirecta.me there will be a stream available to watch the game. It starts at 16:00 CET if you are interested.
