Drogba ditches future African player of the Year awards

According to Goal.com, Drogba was initially named 'African Player of the Year', however, due to his inability to attend the cermony, being that Ivory Coast were in the middle of ACN QF preperations, the award was instead handed to Sevilla striker Fredric Kanoute.

Drogba later came out to say that he is digusted with the award being given to another player, therefore publicaly stating that he will no longer accept 'African Player of the Year' awards.

I wouldn't give a flying **** about awards like these if I was a professional football player.

Fair enough reaction, CAF are a bunch of idiots to do this!

i think drogba would have stopped attending any more african player of the year ceremonies even if he had not won such is the attitude of the player but this was a wrong decision of the caf...

so Drogba stays with his squad to prepare for an important match...and Kanoute doesn't play the 2nd half of their final group game and couldn't careless if his team advances...but he gets the award because he showed up? ridiculous

Is it true that if you don't use it, you lose it?

Essien showed up in the ceremony as he was released by his NT to do so. He also had a game coming in 2 days and that didn't seem to affect his performance at all. Besides, players were warned in advance by CAF that failing to attend the ceremony, they would be stripped from the prize.

Drogba is a whinging cry baby and anyway Kanouté deserved it much more than him.

I still think its fair to say that CAF poorly organised the timing of the event and it's shamefull the way they have dealt with the whole fiasco. Here in Bulgaria Berbatov couldnt attend because of the very demanding New Year schedule in the EPL so the orginisers just held it 2 weeks latter. Kanoute himself said that he wouldnt have went if his team had progressed to the next stage.

Couldn't they have just organised this ceremony in Ghana? I mean all the best African players were there ...

This would have been the ONLY logical move to make.

I mean, did the CAF not know where the ACN will be held? Honestly??

AFC (Asia) is even worse.

They just give the award to whoever is available.

Surprisingly enough, this same ceremony was held last March in GHANA, Accra in fact and CAF has this tradition of circulation - silly to the geniuses over here without question - so i guess this proves Drogba's real class, an arse at best!

I see a true arse indeed.

So why didn't he ditch his snobbish celebrations as well throughout the tourney whether scoring or even advancing to a further stage? Stilieke's son was ill way before ACN, you know..

Well as much as I think Drogba can be a real prick at times.. but I totally agree with him here..

the CAF proved here how stupid they are.. as u've mentioned.. WHY NOT HAVE IT IN GHANA!!! and why not give it to him cuz he didn't show up!! where's the logic in that.. it's not the "African Available Player of the Year" award!!

Best Regards,

Yasir
