Road to the WC 2010

Hosts South Africa to play in 2010 World Cup qualifiers -> Yahoo! Sports

The five winners will join 43 other countries in the first group phase, where the teams will be divided into 12 groups of four teams each at the World Cup draw in Durban on Nov. 25.

They will play six rounds of matches through 2008 with the 12 group winners plus eight best runners-up progressing to the last league stage.

The 20 remaining teams are to be divided into a final stage of five groups of four, with the resultant group winners going onto the World Cup in South Africa and the top three in each group qualifying for the 2010 Nations Cup finals in Angola.

Should South Africa finish top of their group, the runner-up would qualify for the 2010 World Cup, officials told Reuters.

More important that how it could look like is how it will look like, so here's some news about the first round of World Cup qualifiers in Africa:

Saturday, October 13
Madagascar v Comoros Islands

Sunday, October 14
Sierra Leone v Guinea Bissau

Saturday, November 17
Djibouti v Somalia
Guinea Bissau v Sierra Leone
Comoros Islands v Madagascar

Djibouti and Somalia meet in a single play-off match because Somalia have had to forfeit home advantage.

The winners of the three ties will join 45 other countries in the group draw, to be made in Durban on November 25.

Man, looking at those possible 2nd round groups, we have some serious competition on our hands. We have so many good teams that could go to the world cup, it is going to be hot. Even down to pot 3 and 4 there are good outsiders liks Algeria, Senegal, Mali and DRC.
