Gotta love Africa ....

Letseke questions age of Togo

The coach of the South African under-17 team Lemse Letseke has called into question the age of Togo's youth players.

Letseke's comments come in the wake of his side's 2-0 defeat to hosts Togo in the opening match of the African Under-17 Championships.

Letseke told the BBC: "We have played a team of old men!

"We were supposed to be playing players who are under the age of 17 only in this tournament.

"However, despite this, I wish them luck and hope they qualify for the semi-finals."

Both goals of the game, which took place in the Kegue Stadium in Togo, came in the second-half.

Togo's Abraw Camaldine turned in his shot after a goalmouth scramble in the 56th minute.

Atakora Lamawele then broke through the Amajimbo's defence and shot through the legs of the goalkeeper to seal the victory for the Togolese.

The Young Hawk's go top of Group A after Gabon drew with Tunisia in a goalless draw in the second game of the day.

Captain of the Togolese team, Awounyo Papa Koami was pleased with the performance.

"We followed the instructions of the coach at half time and then played well to win the game.

"I am confident we will win our next match if we play the same way," Koami said.

All four semi-finalists of the competition will go through to the Fifa Under 17s tournament that will be held in South Korea this summer.

Always the questions about the age..Normally this is often excuse material for disgruntled Europeans. I really don't believe in it, do you?

Well from what I've seen and what I've read, its common for teams to field over-age players. However, there's two cases, the first being where the coach knew the player is over-aged, and the second, where the player falsified players and the coach didn't know. The second case is common, I can guarantee that. As for the first, I think its dwindling down nowadays with the increasing control measures being put out.

Man, at youth level we do win. In senior level we get humilitated by Ghana, just a few weeks ago. It appears once again that the talent is present, but only in the youth, when the players are still unspoilt and ego-less.
