African Player Of The Year (Nominations)

With the end of the year almost upon us I think we should have an African Player of the Year category. To make it fair we'll first nominate the Top 5 that should be included in the list and then we'll have a final vote on the winner. My top 5:

Didier Drogba (Chelsea/Ivory Coast)
Michael Essien (Chelsea/Ghana)
Samuel Eto'o (Barcelona/Cameroon)
Mohamed Abou Trieka (Al Ahly/Egypt)
Emmanuel Adebayor (Arsenal/Togo)

Picking Adebayor was the toughest decision but I think he's had a good year with Arsenal and he pretty much single handedly led Togo to the World Cup.

If it wasn't for his injury I would pick Eto'o but in this case my vote goes undoubtedly to Mohamed Aboutrika. He proved that one can be a world class player even not playing in Europe.

I would nominate the same four but put in Kolo Toure for Adebayor.

No doubt for me that Didier Drogba has been the best african player this year!

Good choices for your top five Tony, and I'd Also like to mention two more names that impress me!
Obafemi Martins has been great and I feel does'nt get enough recognition.
The other fellow I like, and yes I'm biased, is Alton Meiring.

because of injury right, be clear on that, because on the pitch he was the best undoubtedly. not just in africa, in the world.

IMO best in his position. No need to bring petty little club wars in here mate.

I go for the same as Tony, but I'd replace Adebayor with Appiah, who imo is marvellous and equally important to Ghana as Essien.

Kolo Toure has to be in that list, he is a monster for Arsenal, and was our most important player in setting a new Chamipon's League clean-sheet record.

I don't know if you've noticed it but this is about the African Player of the Year and not the Arsenal African player of the Year. You could no doubt make a list like that too but probably not on this forum.

Seems like everyone is alright on the first 4 and we have 2 votes for Kolo Toure instead of Adebayor and one for Appiah instead of Adebayor AND an honorable mention for Obafemi Martins. So for now, the new 5 nominated players:

Didier Drogba (Chelsea/Ivory Coast)
Michael Essien (Chelsea/Ghana)
Samuel Eto'o (Barcelona/Cameroon)
Mohamed Abou Trieka (Al Ahly/Egypt)
Kolo Toure (Arsenal/Ivory Coast)

It is difficult, because Eto'o and Touré have done brilliant in the CL, so that must not be forgotten. Maybe I take Touré over Appiah as well.

Why don't you do a poll? Like that you will have the 987th XT poll fight between the EPL/Arse fans and the La Liga/Barca fans...mighty interesting!

Club performances don't count?

I don't think any other Africans from Arsenal besides Toure should be nominated. Just that Toure has played well enough for Arsenal to deserve to be up there...

I think Eto'o deserve it again... but if it's Drogba, I wouldn't say a thing. I think he's been outstanding since last summer. Defintely, not Essien.
